Appendix N science fiction edition.

I crit!
The DMG appendix N does have quite a few science fiction in it as well as fantasy and many that are both, but what a list of a mostly or a purely science fiction appendix N be like?

For me it would absolute include Starship Troopers, The Dragon Never Sleeps, Neruomancer and many classics. I haven't put one together but I think I'll use this thread to do so. And I'm always looking for other good books to read. I wonder what Gary's list would have been like.

Doc Smith's Lensmen series, for sure. His Skylark series possibly. Van Voght's Slan. Pretty much half of what Andre Norton wrote. And the list goes on...

One of the best Sci Fi series I've read in years is Ben Bova's Grand Tour series, which details man's expansion into the solar system.

And Asimov's "Nightfall" is a must-read, IMHO, even moreso than his Foundation or Robots stuff.

Add Niven's Known Universe stories and the Dream Park novels.

I'd add Kristine Katherine Rusch's Retrieval Artist novels and Greg Bear's Forge of God & Anvil of Stars.

Looking further back, pretty much all of H.G. Wells and Jules Verne's stuff should be on the list.

Are you looking to create a ~1978 version, or is this an updated list? There's a lot of interesting stuff that's new, and a lot of old stuff that's dated. There's also a lot of well regarded stuff that I'm sure Gygax would have disdained. :D

PS

Depends what kind of sci-fi, but for the "age of sail in space + lots of weird :):):):)" stuff that I'd like to game with the most I'd go with Poul Anderson (specifically the Van Rinj ones) and George R. R. Martin's old sci-fi stories (which you should really really read if you haven't, it's wonderful to have Martin stories that end, and then you get to read another one :) ).

*busy scribbling things down*

I was initially interested in mid 90's. But a 1978 version would be fascinating. I wonder if anything from Gary or out of TSR ever covered such a thing?

Traveler.

The 70's "age of sail in spaaaaaaaaace" stuff is easier to pull inspiration from just like "Swords and Sorcery" is easier to pull inspiration from since the basic ideas are pretty unified more than say "modern fantasy" (how to put Harry Potter and Game of Thrones together?).
