D&D 5E A Unique Artifact/Item

First Post
Hi all,

I am running a new campaign for my son, who wants to be a vampire PC. Now before we get started, I have read the threads about NOT allowing this, but you know, I like to live dangerously.
So I am going to do this. So moving on from that, he has asked how to go about getting an item
that would help negate the vampire sunlight weakness. Now I remember one of my favorite novels was "Daughter of the Drow" where Liriel Baenre, the daughter of Gromph Baenre crafted an item called the "Banshee Pendant" where she took the magical ore from the Underdark to 1) stop the degradation of drow items in sunlight on the surface, and 2) allowed her dark elven magic to work as she anticipated even though she was far away from the radiation of the "Fazress" (think that was the name of the ore). Now in 3rd edition, there was a feat called sunlight adaptation, but how would you suggest he go about accomplishing this in 5e?? Any insight would be appreciated.

Some vampire TV shows like Angel feature a magic ring that protects undead from sunlight. I'd favor that over a feat, since the character could be put in danger if the ring is lost or stolen later. Hard to do that with a feat.

You could also add a cost to the magic item, like a regular sacrifice that must be made or a god that must be obeyed to maintain the power.

thanks for the suggestion, an item is one of the options I was thinking of and the idea of it being taken from him is a good option to throw him off from time to time. Appreciate the input

I will probably incorporate the whole sacrifice to a god (namely Strahd) as he is the Lord that will have turned him to a vampire spawn in the first place and he is the one who will provide the item, so if he doesn't conform or obey then he'll take the item back

Wave the GM wand. Necklace of Sunlight resistance. If, somehow, that means he's kicking too much butt, give all enemies another 20 HP.

Or he just becomes glittery in sunlight...

Is this a one-PC campaign? If so you could keep sunlight sensitivity for flavour and run things at night, indoors, underground etc.

Or give him a 'human shape' item or ability usable 1/long rest, or something. Didn't Dracula have that?

Another interesting option would be "Yes, but..." for his powers. In example, while it is not a preserved facet of vampirism in DnD, the "Uninvited" Clause is always seriously fun with which to work. He obtains the power to walk in the sunlight, but cannot enter private domains without permission. Running Water is another one that could be a limited hindrance for story-telling purposes, that comes with the benefit of basking in the rays.
