D&D 5E A tiny silver bell without a clapper...

So one of my players rolled this as a trinket a while back and has probably forgotten about it. I was going to surprise them with it starting to ring in their mind at the presence of undead. There is also a Paladin in the group with Divine Sense though so there is some overlap there.

What other cool things could the ringing signify?

Character is a Half-Orc Rogue who stole the trinket from a Bard but has now entered the Dark Sun world of Athas through a one-way portal. (I love D&D)

All answers welcome (including silly)

Cheers.

Metal is fairly rare in Dark Sun, so the bell could ring when 'reacting' to the nearby presence of other silver (or any other metal). an item like that would be coveted by a lot of dangerous beings on Athas...

Maybe the clapper isn't absent, just invisible. And the bell is like a dog whistle, ringing at a frequency outside normal humanoid hearing range. It's actually a secret sign used by members of a particular race (I'm thinking Kenku) to identify each other as fellow secret agents for a particular espionage agency. Effectively, the player is carrying around the equivalent of a password or secret handshake and won't know it until he happens across such an agent.

Maybe its not a bell. Maybe its a hat or helm of a tiny fairy that eventually finds the group and asks for it back. It's a family heirloom said to have been touched by Queen Mab herself, and the fairy will be indebted to the character for giving it back.

Athas? The bell rings when …
- In the presence of Elemental beings or effects.
- Bad weather - storms, dust clouds - approaching but just on the horizon
- DEFILERS are near. Sounds like "Ask not for whom the Bell tolls, it tolls for thee."
- A supply of water is near. Doesn't know about any processing needed or monsters / defenders that guard it, though.
- A devil or a demon is near. Use the audio track at the beginning of "Hells Bells"; see if your players get the hint.
- Slay an edible monster (survival rations) and get the dinner-triangle "Come and get it" sound effect.
