Simple automatons made of light wood, paper, and sometimes feathers, a winged fan is a (relatively) cheap animated object originally designed as a children's toy. Accidents invariably happened, resulting in bruises or paper cuts from errant winged fans. These injuries only got worse when fan-fighters started modifying their constructs with razor blades, ground glass, or weighted wing tips.
