3D Bases (Modular terrain for RPG, Wargames, Skirmish)

Hello everyone!

This post is about a future Kickstarter (starting in the next months) about something that all gamers will probably love: modular terrain bases.




We are Manorhouse Workshop (http://manorhouseworkshop.com/) an Italian company with nearly 2 decades of experience on the sector (even on custom work, like the Helm's Deep of Lords of the Rings).

Those bases are made of a new material, which is very resistant and nearly unbreakable. The bases are 30cm x 30cm, and will be sold during the KS at a very, very affordable price.

As of now, 4 bases have been done about a ruined abbey, but many more are to come: 2 more bases to finish the abbey, but also cemeteries, rivers, hills, roads and fields to build a landscape around, or for your armies to clash on.

The goal is to give gamers and roleplayers affordable terrain to quickly build a setting to move their miniatures around, without hours of preparation, at a low price budget, but with typical Manorhouse quality.

Hi everybody!
We are increasing our commitment to the completion of the 3D Bases project, and this will continue for the next weeks up to its completion.
Here is the 5th base, completed and painted.
You can see how we left a lot of room for gaming, thanks to the differences in heights, walls, and passages mixing all over this base.
In this ruined land, some few things are still unscathed, open for discovery.

We are already working on the 6th base, which will complete the abbey!
Here is the overall view of the 5 bases created up to now.






Once the abbey will be completed (in the next article) we will develop other bases related to the surrounding land: rivers, hills, and much more!
To let you understand better the dimensions and gaming possibilities, we are giving you more pictures, this time with some soldiers exploring the ruin.

Hi everybody,
Here we are showing you the first “simple” base (cobblestones) and also the 6th base of the abbey (still in work in progress), which will complete the overall structure of the cloister and convent.



Now let’s speak more in details about the project, about the KS and how it will be organized!
All the items will be divided into 3 different price ranges:
– Range A (6,00 € only for the KS): price of a single base, if plain and/or very low heights (like cobblestones or earth).
– Range B (8,00 € only for the KS): price for a single base, if with some light heights (river or roads)
– Range C (15,00 € only for the KS): price for a single complex base with high details/heights which can reach 7-8 cm high (like the building structures of the abbey)
Every price range will have its own pledge.
Also we will open the preview of the KS page to get your feedbacks so as to prepare best all the pledges.
Here you can see one of the “simple” base (cobblestones), mixed with a base of the abbey to give you a first impression, but we’re only just at the beginning of the bases of Range A and B that we will create.



Of course, there will be also pledges focusing on Skirmish like the 6 bases of the abbey…
Also, every base will be able to be purchased singularly and/or in various number, allowing you to create an infinite plethora of different terrain and battlegrounds!
This is all for now. In our next article we will focus more onto how different gaming miniatures look and fit on our 3D bases.

Hi to everyone.
We finally completed the Abbey with the ruined cloister.
The full planimetry of the building is composed of 6 tridimensional Bases, each one measuring 30×30 cm and with a maximum height of 7-8 cm.



The 6th and last base created could be called a classical meeting place for daily monk activities … the latrines and the rooms for the ablutions.



The whole structure fits perfectly any Skirmish game where you can hide and protect your miniatures behind the numerous obstacles that cover the bases.
The complexity and realism of the architecture can give birth to various gaming scenarios, to be used in a lot of different settings, be it historical, fantasy, and why not, even sci-fi!

Every base can be used on its own, surrounded by any other kind of terrain, like it was the last remains of a long age past, now surrounded by other structures or landscapes, like some modern houses.
This is to show you that there are endless ways to combine our modular bases to achieve any kind of grand final result, gaming or otherwise. This is what 3D Bases is about! Modularity and Quality of MHW at Affordable Prices.



Of course, our bases can be used with nearly all existing miniatures.
We’d like to show a little sneak peak of our next 3D Bases article.
We organized a party on our 6th base with the miniatures of a game which is very hot nowadays. Zombicide of Cool Mini or Not – Guillotine Games.
From what you can see, the atmosphere merges perfectly with the Zombicide miniatures.



This is just a small sneak peak, you will see soon how easy it is to play and create gaming sessions on our 3D Bases with various games (like D&D) but also Zombicide!

Hi everyone.

Today it’s time to dust off one of the most known RPG of the whole gaming universe: D&D. In the long life of this fantastic game, players went from playing with simple paper sheets to complete tridimensional terrain, passing through some artistic play mats.
With our 3D Bases we want to show you how awesome playing on a tridimensional terrain can be.
With the help of our dear friend and contributor David Destefanis, who brought the amazing miniatures (some of the brands: Reaper, Dark Sword, Avatar of Wars) that you will see in those pictures, we are showing us a short game report.

In the ruins of a church, a Lich, a faithful follower of Vecna, is planning to resurrect Aoskar (an ancient God of Portals, killed by the Lady of Pain ruling on Sigil) to allow his master to consume his power. The group of heroes (known as the Stone Company), inside the church, turns to face an ambush at their backs, organized by an Ogre Magi and two Orcs, champions of Gruumsh, who were hidden from sight due to the spell Screen.More on the background, we can see the Lich with some Harpies and Gargoyles, who just morphed from their statue form to attack by surprise the heroes!

The group of Mystra is teaming up with the surviving champions of Mielikki inside the cloister. che stanno fronteggiando un Elementale della Terra, uscito dal terreno con altri due Campioni di Gruumsh.
The Stone Company and the powerful mage (Elminster) had indeed teamed up to stop this evil plan.

Meanwhile, an ancient duel, old like existence itself, is happening:
An Angel and a Devil are facing each other, fully focusing into obliterating one another.
Let’s this epic duel continue and go back to our 3D Bases.
The beautiful miniatures seem to take a new life inside the Abbey, for countless hours of play.

Hi everyone,
Today we have to show the results of a ungrateful job.
We need to test the resistance of the 3D Bases. Brrr…. We shudder just thinking about it.
Let’s start with throwing the base on the ground and step on it repeatedly with some strong working (and quite dirty) shoes…
… then, after stepping on it for a while, you realize you just need a wet cloth to clean the base and bring it back to its former glory.
Amazing. Try to do the same with any other material. 1 to 0 for the 3D Bases.

In the second video we want to get more brutal with the our bases.
The first test is “crumple and rub” with my “delicate” hands … done repeatedly on a Cobblestones base. I even try to rip it apart. But in the end I must give up and I put it back at his place, unscathed. 2 to 0 for the 3D Bases.
Let’s try then with a more tridimensional base, the “Column with Ruins”. There, it should not survive, be assured!
I fold and twist it in all the ways I can think of, I show that it’s hollow on the other side, I try to bend it in multiple ways … then I put it back onto the table. The base is completely fine, like nothing happened. If it weren’t alive, I’d swear that it was looking at me with gleeful smile. 3 to 0 for the 3D Bases, I give up.
What to say ? It’s an amazing material, nearly indestructible and who gives back the perfect image of the print.

Hi everyone,
On some of the forums people are asking : “but do the bases have a fixation system between one another ?”
The answer is: they don’t fix to each other. The material they’re made of is not too light and the other side of the base is glossy.
This allows a natural adherence on all surfaces (like a table, or on a tablecloth).
The first video will allow you to understand fully what we mean.
We did throw 2 bases on our table. One flat (Cobblestones base) and one tridimensional (Column Ruins base). The result ? When they land on the table they land firmly in place and do not glide over.

But what happens if we place several bases together ? Can they move or glide when we place our miniatures or other stuff on top ?
Not really. In our second video we show you that by passing our hand quickly and heavily on the base, the later just doesn’t really move.
Same result if we move our hand quickly on all bases.
Of course, this test is pushed to the extreme, you’d never let your 3D Bases subject to such stress in real life. But this is to show you that there is no need to attach the bases one to another.
