D&D 3E/3.5 3.5 Half Dragon/Half Dragon?

RUMBLETiGER

Adventurer
We've established in previous threads that dragons breed with pretty much anything. They get around a lot.

However, and I'm surprised I haven't seen anything on this before, but what happens when a dragon of one color breeds with a dragon of another? A Red Dragon with a Gold? A Green Dragon with a Blue? A Bronze dragon with a White? etc, etc...

Does one simply apply the Half-dragon template to a full dragon? Are there existing rules for figuring this?

If it helps to be specific, I'm wanting to breed a male Black dragon with a female Silver dragon.

The "Half" templates pretty much unanimously consider the other half to be something other than the template.
I don't think "Dragon/Dragon" counts.

However, assuming it does, the following changes are all that really need to be made: Additional breath weapon by type 1/day, +4 natural armor, immunity to a second energy type, the bonus to stats (8 str, 2 con, 2 cha, 2 int), and an LA of 3 (or CR of 2).

I did something like this a loooong time ago. Though it was just for a dragon breed, not a PC. I mixed a red and a white dragon, named it Frostfire - creative I know, I was young. Mostly all I did was combine the elements; half of the breath weapon was fire damage/half frost damage, resistances were split between frost and fire, etc. Both were "evil" dragon types though so the alignment was pretty easy to determine; a mix between black/silver you'd have to decide which was more dominate, or just go neutral I suppose.

Even in the Dragonomicon (sp?) I don't recall ever seeing a mixed breed formula, may be one but I am unaware of such. I say just wing it and go with what feels right. Average out all the die (ie: hit die from one being a d10, the other a d6, use a d8 for your new breed) and any other statistics.

and you'd be a Dragon not a Humanoid, a few of the people I have played with have mistaken the image in the MM for a representation of all half-dragons, a Half Dragon/Half Troll is still a butt-ugly troll just with scales and a breath weapon.

I am curious what a half Red Dragon/Cryo-Hydra is, would that be a Hydra or still a Cryo-hydra with fire immunity

EDIT: In the Dragonomican it says Dragons hate each other and attack on sight (I guess there are exceptions) so there are no hybrids in the WC material AFAIK

Dragons could stil have their own version of the story of Romeo & Juliet. Especially if they first met while polymorphed.

...which is how you get Orange, Purple, Teal, and "metal-flake" dragons! ;)

There were some Dragon articles in the days of 1Ed that had dragon hybrids, and gem dragons besides.

Hm... ok, looking at Draconomicon. p.26 starts the section on Dragon Society. Relevant excerpts include:

-"Dragons of different species seldom form alliances, though they have been known to cooperate under extreme circumstances, such as when a powerful mutual threat arises"
-"Metallic dragons of different species are more apt to cooperate with each other"
-"though only gold and silver dragons are known to forge lasting friendships. The loquacious brass dragon enjoys the company of other metallic dragons"
-"Metallic dragons never cooperate with chromatic dragons"
-"The dragon will share this area [territory] with no other dragons except it's mate and offspring (if any)"
-"Though chromatic dragons are not eager to share territory, they tolerate some overlap between their territories and those of neighboring dragons of the same species or alignment."
"In many cases, a dragon shares overlapping territory with a mate or potential mate."

p.27 excerpts:
"Crossbreeds between dragon species are not unknown, but very rare. A hybrid of this sort is usually left to fend for itself, but on occasion both parents (if they are on good terms with each other) might watch over it until it reaches adulthood."

So... it appears that dragons of the same alignment, but of different breeds, are the only likely ones to have a crossbreed child. So, we've got possible combos of:
CE- Black and Red, Red and White, White and Black
LE- Blue and Green
CG- Brass and Copper
LG- Bronze and Gold, Gold and Silver, Silver and Bronze

Add the possabilities of the other True dragons, such as the 10 planar dragons (Draconomicon), Shadow Dragon (Draconomicon), Sand Dragon (Sandstorm), 8 Lung dragons (Oriental Adventures), Deep Dragon (Drow of the Underdark), 5 Gem dragons (MMII) and likely more that I'm forgetting.

...All this info and I still don't know what the crossbreed looks like, acts like or is capible of.

Hm... add in Monster Manual V, p.38 "Dragons of the Great Game" (Xorvintaal).
Dragons of all types interact with each other through this. Convoluted strategy is the name of the game, and dragon alliances, patron/vassal relationships, etc are all involved. This allows for another scenario where a mating for a crossbreed may be strategized.

We never went with the color restrictions (heck, we have purple dragons) and we have a lot of mixed dragons, often with more than one color. Generally, we have the offspring follow one breed in build and abilities (with some added abilities of the other parent if the dice falls right) and either color or a mix of the colors.

My current high level dragon PC is a blue-golden dragon (as in one color) with mostly the abilities of a golden dragon.

If the books don't answer your questions and needs, make your own answers ;)
