+2 Flaming, Shocking, Frezzing Great Axe

Is it possible? Would it simply deal 1d12+(str. x 1.5)+2+1d6 fire+1d6 cold+1d6 electric?

If so i think this could get overpowered. One of my players has enough cash to make his great axe go from +2 flaming to +2 flaming and shocking.

Also, take a look at the descriptions for those abilities.

from the SRD:

-----
Flaming

Upon command, a flaming weapon is sheathed in fire.
-----

-----
Activation

If a weapon has a special ability that the user needs to activate, then the user usually needs to utter the command word (a standard action).
-----

So if he's willing to spend 3 standard actions to activate flaming, shocking, and freezing it's not that bad. Of course, combat may be close to over by then...

You can have the weapons all ready for a fight; it'd just look funny to see a person walking around with an unsheathed sword covered in fire.

Jormungand, the way that I read the information on DR in the DMG, the energy effects would beat the DR.

Damage reduction does not negate touch attacks, energy damage dealt along with an attack (such as fire damage from a fire elemental), or energy drains.

This thread talks about this more.

Use a one handed axe or weapon, get a glove of storing, and you got yourself a flaming, frost, shocking weapon always on. Good times had by all. By the time you get that money, you need that much damage. Not that big of deal. I'd rather have a +5 weapon than all that though.

True, the damage reduction does not affect the energy part, but that's handled by large amounts of Energy Resistances. The high DRs can still make it difficult to do damage otherwise.

Yup. But there's only a small percentage of creatures that are immune or resistant to all three types of energy on that axe. I think Demons or Devils are, maybe both.

Maybe, but that's neither here nor there. Personally, I'd rather sacrifice one of the energy enhancements for Sure Striking.

DM's fiat

I would remind all you DMs out there that you are not required to let characters take advantage of every seeming loophole they discover, although you certainly can if you want to. I would not find the multiple energy unbalancing, but I do think is sounds a bit silly. I have a character in my campaign who has a +1 dagger with flame and frost abilities, but only one may be active at a time (converted from Tenser's dagger of frost and flame). Not an efficient use of weapon enchantments, but still useful. Also remeber that you are not required to have high level wizards and sorcered around just waiting for the chance to add enchantments to your character's items for a "small" fee, unless you want to.
