Does anyone know if there is a place I can download the 1st edition AD&D font, preferably for free?

Several places, depending on which font you mean.

The Western-style font where they printed "Advanced Dungeons & Dragons" in red on a yellow background has been cloned as Quentin Caps. I think that may be the one you're talking about, and you can get it free here:

The font they used for the Monster Manual, Dungeon Master's Guide and Player's Handbook body text has been cloned as Futura Lt Bt, and the font they used in the early modules was Century Gothic.
