1. is there a better name for the phb1 warlock than "original"?

2. Will this mess ever get straightened out?

3. Will "dark pact" be renamed "gloom pact" so that the original emo-locks can use future support for more recent emo-locks?

Why? For the same reason we have ten types of Wizard (Evoker, Pyromancer, Enchanter, Illusionist, Necromancer, Nethermancer, Orb, Staff, Tome and Wand), because apparently you cannot have enough Wizards and Warlocks.

We should really rename DnD post-essentials to Warlocks and Wizards as opposed to Dungeons and Dragons.

In any event, presumably the Warlock errata might give them a new essentials name. I'm not 100% sure.

Contrary to the burning of Jacques du Molay, 13 ain't so bad. 14, 16, and 19 would be suitable numbers for warlocks too. 17 is straight out. :p

If you consider "weaponmaster" and "scoundrel" better names, then yes, a better name is pending. In our group we differentiate by calling a PHB class by it's normal name and an essentials class by its essentials name, in this case hexblade.

Next edition?

The dark pact struck me as being unique to the drow, which is why it was introduced in the FRPG I believe; the gloom pact is more generically "emo."

1. The warlock's mechanic being based on the type of patron lends itself easily to making variants. Plus, since the hexblade and the binder, we now have 3 classes/builds under the general "warlock" umbrella.

2. Does it need to be?

3. Oh, that's just mean!

I think we have so many versions of Warlock because of WotC's "Fix-it-by-adding-more" motto. That way they can sell to those dissatisfied with older versions and not have to reprint material.

I could easily see several more types of warlocks being introduced. Their flavor is such that it is very easy to come up with new types, just like the wizard and cleric. I don't really see this as a problem personally.

As for the gloom pact and dark pact, flavor-wise they're not really all that similar, so I wouldn't expect them to be combined.
