Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

    What are the rules for?

I think you may be conflating rules that evoke a setting with rules that simulate a setting. The NPCs in Burning Wheel do not actually follow the lifepaths in their own lives and know how they work. The non-powered NPCs in superhero comics do not find that karma, doom pools, minions etc are...

OK, but that still isn't the limit of available RPGs.

Let's Talk About Levels or Tiers of Success

I don't know, but you do it regularly. The point is, you made a blanket statement about RPGs, that is only true about the RPGs you prefer. If you don't want to talk about them, or to have people point out your error, don't make such broad statements.

Let's Talk About Levels or Tiers of Success

Sure but this thread and all threads on ENWorld are not about your preferences. It is false for RPGs in general.

Let's Talk About Levels or Tiers of Success

So saying players might be self-interested consciously or unconsciously is normal, but saying that GMs might be is adversarial? What happens when a player becomes the GM, or the GM becomes a player? No they don't. There are many games for which this is absolutely false.

Let's Talk About Levels or Tiers of Success

OK. I tease you sometimes but I've had enough real discussions with you to give you a proper answer. The rules structure discussed inherently gives the GM an authority over what a success 'means'. If I roll to persuade someone of something, and I succeed, and there are no degrees of success...

Your games may involve players passively consuming what they are given, but mine do not.

Let's Talk About Levels or Tiers of Success

How is it flexible for players - do they get to interpret the levels of success for the roll themselves? No, I'm Renley on this. Multiple amorphous levels of success means the GM has too much ability to downgrade successful rolls into 'nearly, but not quite'.

D&D General I’m Trying to Love D&D Again—and I’ve Got Some Complaints. Young Grognard posting.

Wait what? 4e was very rewarding of skillful play, and punishing of bad play. I would say more so than in 3e (where the mastery was in chargen). I have never before felt that Gamist thrill of 'each decision matters' so strongly in an RPG. Some of our combats reminded me of tournament Magic...

    What are the rules for?

You said in the other thread you don't think play is a priority and that RPGs are designed just to be read.
