Almost as if they had time to learn what worked and how to improve on the existing rules along with general shifts in what people want. Also, the amount of change is debatable. It's not like it's going to be a whole new game.

I've actually seen the opposite. Gal had incredible luck rolling (multiple 18s, nothing below a 14), better than anyone else at the table, far, far better than another person. She felt guilty about having such an OP PC and committed suicide by goblin.

One other note on this is that there was also a point buy system for 3E that let you buy up to an 18. The default points granted is 27, but the "heroic" was 32. I don't think 18s to start are necessary for 5E but it is an option. Just Google D&D 3 point buy, one site D&D Point Buy

I don't allow rolls, I've seen too many times when there's a vast difference in the results. That doesn't work for me so we always use point buy. Last game I joined, the vote for point buy was pretty unanimous. 🤷‍♂️

It explicitly states that you're calling in a favor. If you're paying your way some other way that's been negotiated, you don't need the background feature.

That's clearly not what it means. It further clarifies that you are calling in a favor. How do you do that with someone you've never met?
