D&D General D&D Red Box: Who Is The Warrior?

It's fun to guess who has a background in visual art, and who doesn't, just by reading their posts.

D&D General D&D Red Box: Who Is The Warrior?

To be clear: I'm not blaming WizKids for anything; it's abundantly clear why they interpreted this piece of art the way they did. It's a great idea, and I hope they make buckets of money so they can do more like it. It raises the profile of Elmore's art, and my favorite boxed set. (Maybe...

WotC Has Wizards Screwed up again

I know why clickbait exists, and why it's so heavily promoted by content creators on YouTube. I'm just sayin', maybe we could just NOT repost it here. I'd like to think this is an RPG NEWS site, not another Internet rumor mill.

D&D 5E Why is There No Warlord Equivalent in 5E?

Agree on all points except one: I think plenty of people enjoy D&D with the perception of hit points as "meat points." They seem to enjoy it more that way, in fact, and it's not hard to understand why. Seriously, give this a try: the next time one of your players makes an attack roll, ask...

The one we use the most is 5E D&D, but I've tinkered around with Big Eyes Small Mouth and Goblin Slayer. We're pretty excited about Obojima Tales From The Tall Grass...it's probably going to be my next full-scale campaign.

D&D 5E Why is There No Warlord Equivalent in 5E?

Yep, if rules alone were sufficient to change peoples' hearts and minds on this subject, it would have happened long ago. So I feel pretty safe saying that the rules aren't the issue. Those assumptions aren't changing, because Team MeatPoint doesn't want them changed any more than Team...

D&D 5E Why is There No Warlord Equivalent in 5E?

It's not just "old schoolers." There are assumptions in the game that we all make to fit the narrative, and they aren't easily "ruled" away. Try this exercise at your table: when one of your players makes a weapon attack and scores damage on a target, ask them to describe what it looks like...

Yeah, I got nothing. There is a thing where people derive pleasure from pain...so maybe it's like that? Like the people who show up to meetings just to argue and complain, or love eating extremely spicy food, or running marathons, or certain um, bedtime activities.

D&D 5E Why is There No Warlord Equivalent in 5E?

Not for lack of trying, though. As you said, the topic usually hits a wall when folks try to describe what healing looks like. But why? I think the biggest trouble with 'non-magical healing' being more widely accepted, is that it requires acceptance that hit points aren't physical damage...

Kind of a tangent, but... For years, I've overheard folks here and on Reddit talking about how they can make their game run more and more like whatever popular video game. It started with people wanting things to "be more like Diablo II" in the early 2000s, with feat trees and magic item sets...

    Am I being too optimistic?

@MatthewJHanson has the right of it. You see, there are lots of different ways to play D&D. Some folks "play D&D" by packing up their books and their character sheet, heading over to their friend's house, and hanging out rolling dice for several hours. Other folks "play D&D" by poring over...
