Its an older mindset. SOmething that I have never found anyone that started in 4e or 5e to have, but did when I first started in 3.5.

Okay, so lots to unpack here.
first: you need an ongoing save. Like every day or every week you can repeat the save to remove the helm. This is why in Young Justice even though fate CAN take a host it prefers a willing one. Maybe make the mental stats still matter too "a magic host is better"...

yes and no, at this point I often see them take that 3rd level of fighter to take eldritch...
give the battlemaster sneak attack and cunning strike and you are 1/2 way there... give them better options like give up damage to sweep multi targets or command someone to hit someone and you really got it.
