Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana on the horizon... recollections and suggestions?

Like D'karr, I like thief-acrobats. And also weapon specialisation. And some of the spells are good and not overpowered eg Aid and Death's Door give clerics something useful to do with 2nd and 3rd level spell slots!

I don't use the sub-races in UA, but I use almost everything else. I houseruled the cavalier and the barbarian; I restrict weapon specialization to fighters and delay access to double specialization. High level specialist attack 3/1, like cavaliers with their weapons of choice do.

I am glad I purchased it 2 weeks ago. One of the better purchases of the year. I have no complaints whatsoever about the UA. It is an excellent book and it did a lot for the game as I host it from time to time.

I am a huge fan of the cavalier and the level limit tables as well... Comliness had its place at one time but I find it an annoying stat. Let charisma do all the work.

The cavalier's XP advancement is fine. It's balanced out with their code; if you follow the code as written in the UA, it's very suicidal to play them. (namely the combination of "War is the flower of chivalry", "Death before Dishonor", and their requirement to take on the deadliest enemies head-on can easily get them in over their head quickly).

In an interview with Frank Mentzer about Unearthed Arcana. He seemed to indicate that it did give a hint (however small) of what 2nd edition AD&D would have looked like if Frank and Gary had stayed at TSR in the 80s.

Got it today. Very, very glad to see the errata - it might actually be a better edition than the original. Don't know what the introduced error level is like yet. :)

Cheers!

*If* I were to rerun a 1E game, I wouldn't run it without Unearthed Arcana. Of course, I'd only been playing AD&D a couple of months before it came out (all B/X games before that). Broken or not, I really liked a lot of what that book brought to the game.

My thoughts exactly in regards to UA. I wanted to use it when it was originally released but the rest of the group was nowhere near as excited about all of the optional stuff as I was at the time. If I ever run 1E again then it's in!

I run 1e and I cherry pick from UA. I ban all the subraces, cavaliers, the broken UA stat generation method, and weapon specialization. In a high stat game, I'd also ban the barbarian. A barbarian with a 15 dex, and 16 con is not all that powerful, considering the exp needed to level. A barbarian with 3 17s and 18s is nasty.
