I guess I missed this the first time around, so the necro works for me.
Season 1 is some of the best TV ever made. Season 2 was terrible. Season 3 was a redemption as a good show, but nowhere near the ballpark of season 1.
I would put Night Country above Season 3, but still not coming close to what we saw in 1. The acting was great. The story was very good, maybe a little too bleak. The script was pretty good, if sometimes a little too much. The pacing was definitely on the slow side. I thought the ending was very satisfactory for the parts I really needed, and open ended for the stuff that it wasn't supposed to answer.
One big thing for me watching 4 was that I could clearly see the formula and know roughly the form the show was taking, even if I had no idea exactly what would happen next in the story. I only really saw the full formula in 3 after it was done. Obviously, in 1 the formula was new and we were all along for the journey.
