One thing I could think they could have done that would have been more powerful for marketing would be to offer content on D&D Beyond. A free short story, some fun holiday themed classes or races, etc. Things that might be of interest to more than just DMs and interesting enough to get people who don't already have DDB accounts to sign up for the free account.
Truth.I feel the need to defend it because folks are whinging over the quality of something offered to them for free that presents no notable burden or cost to them.
"I want better free stuff!" isn't exactly an attractive look in the season, you know?
