It seems like a book focused on them would have had tremendously broader appeal and pushed the D&D brand better because they're D&D specific in a way "colourful giants" can never be. At least dragons are on-brand for Dungeons and Dragons, but giants? It seems like whoever signed off on this has a very 1980s vision of D&D, which is unfortunate in 2023. It looks like the book is actually very modern (indeed Bigby to gnome screams Critical Role influence), but it's a weird choice to even embark on. I suppose giants are far more "PG-rated" than aberrations, so there's that.
Great review, very detailed, all the info I needed. I've never been keen on giants, not because of hill giants and the like (who I've got good use out of), but because of all the tedious elementally-themed giants. Combine that with D&D just not doing fights with larger creatures in at all an interesting way (apparently giants die just fine even if no-one in the party can do more that beat on their shins/knees), and this book continuing both those traditions, plus the paucity of species/classes/Feats/magic items it seems like a very definite skip for me. I have to admit I am somewhat mystified why 5E has doubled down on some of the least-usable monsters with this and the dragon book, especially whilst also stripping out more broadly appealing mechanical stuff. Why not focus on Illithids or Beholders or indeed aberrations in general? It seems like a book focused on them would have had tremendously broader appeal and pushed the D&D brand better because they're D&D specific in a way "colourful giants" can never be. At least dragons are on-brand for Dungeons and Dragons, but giants? It seems like whoever signed off on this has a very 1980s vision of D&D, which is unfortunate in 2023. It looks like the book is actually very modern (indeed Bigby to gnome screams Critical Role influence), but it's a weird choice to even embark on. I suppose giants are far more "PG-rated" than aberrations, so there's that.
