D&D General Favorite Creepy Monster To Run?

I’m sad that the campaign fell apart before they could get to the reveal, but I did have fun roleplaying a hag as the villain of the initial plot arc. Making the party think that this grandmotherly forest sage was helping them when really she was the cause of the crisis and using them to further...

What Bit Of Fan Fic/Edit/Theory Made a Thing Better or even GREAT For You?

A Knights of the Old Republic 2 theory that cascaded into another: The initial theory about the assassins is not mine, though it caused me to think about all the other stuff.

Do you "roleplay" in non-TTRPG Games?

When playing strategy games like Total Warhammer, Stelaris, or Conquest of Elysium, I imagine what the commanders are saying to each other as the campaign plays out. Of course this assumes they have some form of quick long distance correspondence, but I can generally assume magic or super...

D&D General Settings of Hope vs Settings of Despair

Thinking more about it, outside of my current moods about the real world, a reason I might like a “despair” setting is that I can give the bad guy something to point to and say “see? This is why I’m right”, and the main characters would actually have to use their heads a bit to refute them.

D&D General Settings of Hope vs Settings of Despair

I’ve been thinking themes of the possibility of humanity never learning from its mistakes and perhaps even being doomed to destroy itself, but not really in the setting I use for TTRPGs.

It's the End of the World As We Know It: Apocalyptic Campaign Settings

Mid-apocalyptic fits best. The prison keeping the oldest demon kings in check has been destroyed, nights where the stars turn blood red and nightmares walk as flesh are more common, dark magic becomes stronger, and thus more nations are using it making wars become more brutal. It’s a mess, but...

D&D General Oh Please give me some Happy Backgrounds!!

If most of the monsters are non-sapient it could still work. Basically like an accidental hunting trip.

D&D General Oh Please give me some Happy Backgrounds!!

It’s not just about having a reason to leave home or take risks, plenty of people do that. It’s the fact that D&D adventures (remember what banner the thread is under) generally expect the PCs to jump into violence at a moments notice. People doing foreign aid or research tours tend not to do...

D&D General Oh Please give me some Happy Backgrounds!!

I can see it if the adventure is more like a travelogue or pilgrimage rather than an infiltration into enemy territory. E.g. if fights are something the journeyers might stumble upon on they way rather that what they’re seeking out. I don’t see a person content with their life going on a dungeon...

What Makes Something A "Classic"? EDIT: TO YOU

Not only just being able to enjoy it again and again, but finding new things about it to enjoy that you never realized were there until you came back to it.

    D&D General DALL·E 3 does amazing D&D art

Me: Maybe I should stop asking for horrific abominations. Also me: A being resembling a towering walking storm cloud. When lightning flashes within it, images of faces and battles appear inside the cloud.

D&D General Disaster Patrons and Their Longsuffering Warlocks

Thinking about this, given how Outsiders tend to be promoted there’s probably a good deal of Peter Principle going on in the Outer Planes. So a patron could be someone who was really good at their old job but not so much their current one.

D&D General Eberron - why don't you run it? [-]

How it defined “pulp adventure” and “noir intrigue” did not really grab me as main themes to build a campaign around. And I have to agree it’s clearly meant for lower levels, a game with a shallower advancement curve would be more fitting for the setting.

D&D 5E (2024) 5e GMs: Do/Have/Would You Start Above 1st Level? (Note: Cannot change your vote.)

Last time I started at level 2 to balance the awkwardness of different classes subclasses coming online at different levels and wanting some major plot points to happen while the PCs were still still somewhere in the same ballpark as the rest of the world. If I did 5.5 I’d probably start it at...

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

With D&D often feeling like even magic and gods are brute facts that only exist because of magical particles bumping into each other, alignment gives some sense of a telos beyond all this multiversal mess. Not saying it does a good job of it, but it does a job. I also don’t think moral...

    Unpopular Geek Media Opinions

On the house elf thing, there’s two parts to it. House elves do tend to enjoy housekeeping, but they’re magically bound to stay at one house even if that means having to work for people who hurt them. The seemingly obvious solution is to undo the binding so the elves can keep house for whoever...

    Worlds of Design: Only Human

Out of universe, humans are most common because most of them time not having them be would increase the word count without actually increasing the content. If a character is 99% the same if they’re a human, why make them something else? In my setting humans are the baseline and most of the...
