I think FOB is by far the biggest offender when it comes to wasting ki. Once you get to the top of tier 2 you can do patient defense most of the time. Later on you can do it all the time.

Yes, I love playing Eldritch Knights (I assume that is what you mean). On this build, 4 levels on EK is not as good as 4 levels of Ranger. I lose favored foe and the extra subclass damage (whichever subclass I use) as well as expertise and the abilities from whatever subclass I choose.
