D&D 5E (2024) The Undead Army Necromancer is not Designable

No I didn't. Please stop saying this. I changed it because I found encounter design difficult in high level play Because at high levels it makes PCs effectively immune to failing saving throws. This makes it extremely difficult to design encounters to meet the encounter design goals at the...

D&D 5E (2024) The Undead Army Necromancer is not Designable

I said in that screenshot that it is NOT important! I changed indomitable at tables I DM because in high level play it is difficult to design encounters when a PC has this ability, not because it is "disruptive". That is what I said and that is even what you quoted, yet you interpreted...

IME other party members are high fiving the player who is running a bunch of minions.

D&D 5E (2024) The Undead Army Necromancer is not Designable

You can't work more than a day on it because you have to recast animate dead. You have the numbers wrong. When you use Undead Thralls "you can target one additional corpse or pile of bones". This is NOT double the number of bones or one additional corpse for every level above 2nd. So RAW it...

Where? Please provide the quote and highlight the word "balance" in it where it is relevant to what you quoted. How so?

    D&D 5E (2024) Can A Spell Caster Out Damage a Martial Consistently?

Ok maybe I am remembering wrong, I though Treantmonk said he was priamrily using Greatsword for Graze, but they could use Longbows as well when they were not in melee range.

D&D 5E (2024) The Undead Army Necromancer is not Designable

I don't necessarily find the 2014 version of Indomitable "fun", Indomitable is not why I play a fighter, but the 2024 version at very high levels (say around 15+) makes encounters difficult to design, and more importantly it makes published material more difficult to directly apply to the game...

D&D 5E (2024) The Undead Army Necromancer is not Designable

This is not true and if it were true players would not play weaker PCs. Everyone would play a max-power PC tailred for the level and campaign, and they don't. People build their characters to be fun and they play less than optimal characters frequently (virtually all the time in fact) and they...

D&D 5E (2024) The Undead Army Necromancer is not Designable

Maybe that is inferred but if the player is wasting slots summoning undead it is a safe bet that is part of what he or she wants in a character. Unless the other players are fans too, which I think they almost always are in cases like this.

D&D 5E (2024) The Undead Army Necromancer is not Designable

Well IMO balance is not fun. I think a "balanced" game is going to be boring and dull. People who worry about whether one PC is more powerful than another or whether one ability is more powerful than another are the ones who are not having fun IME. I don't think the game is broken and the...

D&D 5E (2024) The Undead Army Necromancer is not Designable

The last thing I want is game designers worrying about balance. They need to worry about fun. If it is fun for players in the game, it should stay in the game.

    D&D 5E (2024) Can A Spell Caster Out Damage a Martial Consistently?

Etherealness keeps them from hitting you, but it does not stop things you left on the battlefield from hitting them and it is a relatively constricted battlefield So something like this if 4 Bards beat all 4 fighters in initiative: Bard 1: Time Stop - Blink, Modenkainan's Hound, Truesight...

    D&D 5E (2024) Can A Spell Caster Out Damage a Martial Consistently?

Initiative is Huge. They are 18th level casters. If you win initiative you kill 2 of them. If they win initiative they unleash spells that flat prevent you from killing them for several rounds.

    D&D 5E (2024) Can A Spell Caster Out Damage a Martial Consistently?

They are GWM martials using primarily a Greatsword with 20 Dexterity so they can use a bow well too if for some reason they can't get to the target. If you are building casters for this I think you want Bards with Spike Growth, Otilukes Sphere, Etherealness, Time Stop, Blink, Mordenkanians...

    D&D 5E (2024) Can A Spell Caster Out Damage a Martial Consistently?

If by better you mean more powerful you are right, if by better you mean more fun in play I would disagree.

    D&D 5E (2024) Can A Spell Caster Out Damage a Martial Consistently?

Agree with this. I will say if you optimized 4 full casters, building them specifically for this arena against 4 Champions, I think you could win this, but 4 casters built for general optimization it is not really even a contest most of the time.

    D&D 5E (2024) Can A Spell Caster Out Damage a Martial Consistently?

Champion is arguably the best subclass in 2024 and I think Champion, at this level, is hands down the best subclass for this particular endeavor. Superior critical + Heroic Inspiration + extra fighting style beats anything another fighter subclass is going to bring. You might be able to beat...

D&D 5E (2024) The Undead Army Necromancer is not Designable

This thread illustrates the difficulties with this discussion. On one hand we have people arguing for less minions and the other people advocating a "fix" that is a spell that creates a horde with one casting.
