D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

The word normal was in the 2014 PHB before a Magic action was even a thing. If your argument is "normal" = Magic aciton, why did they already have that verbiage in the 2014 PHB when there was no such thing as a Magic action? 2014: When you ready a spell, you cast it as normal but hold its...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

So there is a ton of errors, but this the ONLY place they neglected to use the term "Magic action" AND they did not fix it in any errata they published. Yeah, I am not buying that.

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

The "normal" you are quoting in fact comes from the description of the Ready action in the rules glossary. That use of "normal" you are quoting is specific to the Ready action. The phrase "When you Ready a spell, you cast it as normal..." only appears in the description of the Ready action...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

With repect to "Magic action" this would be the only place they missed it then. They use that term over and over and over again even when it is obvious, it would be very peculiar to leave it out here considering the way the rest of the books are written.

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

It is very relevant, it just does not refer to the action IMO. You can't for example ready Command to trigger when the enemy runs around the corner. The reason is the "normal" way you cast that spell requires you to see the target and you can't see it before the enemy runs around the corner...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

This to me is the biggest reason it does not require a Magic action. The rules to "ready a spell" are specific rules that overide the general rules for using the ready action when you use the ready action to cast a spell. If the designers wanted the ready action to use the Magic action to...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

You conveniently ignored the verbiage "usually". Activating a Magic item usually does require a Magic action and it says so in the description of most magic items with a feature you would activate or use. It does not say so in the description of most (any?) magic items that allow you to cast a...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

I think the wording is purposeful. Every item that I know of that casts a spell states you can cast the spell while holding or similar. Items that do something other than cast a spell says you use a "Magic action" to do XXX. That wording differentiation is consistent and I think it is...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

I do agree you cast the spell as normal on your turn, I do not agree that means you use the Magic action. It does not say you use the magic action to do it and using the Magic action to cast it on your turn would require you to take 2 actions on your turn. IMO it is a stretch to think that...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

Table: Cast a spell, use a magic item, or use a magical feature Rules Glossary: When you take the Magic action, you cast a spell that has a casting time of an action or use a feature or magic item that requires a Magic action to be activated. If we are looking at language an important thing to...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

I disagree with this, I think this applies to the mechanics of casting the spell itself, not the action used. The action used is just an abstaction for the mechanics. It has to be this way because you can not take 2 actions on your turn and you need to cast the spell on your turn.

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

The text for the Glamour subclass says they can cast Command as a Bonus Action. The Sorcerer Quicken Spell again allows a Sorcerer to use a Bonus Action to cast a spell with a casting time of 1 Action. The text for the Eldritch Knight says they can use the Attack action to cast spells with a...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

You are taking Ready as your action. Ready is one of the "main actions in the game" according to the PHB. When you ready a spell you take the Ready Action. That is your action on your turn. The spell casting is happening on your turn when you take the Ready Action to "ready a spell". That...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

That is not the normal it is refering to IMO. I think it has to do with what you need to actually cast the spell, not the action - You must have a free hand if you have Somatic components, you must have material components, you can't be silenced if it has verbal components, you have to meet the...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

The verbiage in the rules glossary for "ready a spell" This specifically calls out different mechanics than exist for spells thanor for any other Readied Actions including using a Ready Action to use the Magic Action for something other than a spell. It is an action in and of itself. This is...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

It is a specific triggering event, not a delay. If it was a delay it would always happen, as a Ready Action it only happens if the trigger happens. This is fundamentally different than delaying an action.

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

This is not true. You absolutely can take the Magic Action as a readied action when the trigger happens off turn. Here is the text from actions: Prepare to take an action in response to a trigger you define. Here is the text from the rules glossary: You take the Ready action to wait for a...

No it doesn't. The word delay does not appear in the description or in the table. The word in the table is "prepare"

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

Nothing else except for Readying a spell. That has specific mechanics that are different than any of the actions you can ready including different then readying the Magic Action to do something that requires a Magic Action. Casting a spell is in a special class because it is specifically...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

They use completely separate action economy, permissibility and mechanics for the effect you are trying to achieve to come to pass. The effect is identical, the mechanics are not. One requires an action, the other requires an action, a trigger event and a reaction. This is true for any...
