    What's the best potato?

Fair enough. One of them being gluten-free is important to a number of folks in my life. I had not heretofore realized that traditionally-cooked scalloped potatoes would be a hazard to my mother, due to the roux. That makes more clear to me why she's always served them au gratin, even aside...

    What's the best potato?

I often see the two talked about as if they're identical, but one of those food sites I just linked says they're different, and only one of them definitionally has cheese. https://www.chowhound.com/1732848/au-gratin-vs-scalloped-potatoes/

    Struggling to Find the Resources

Matt Colville's recent video on participating in communities to build a fanbase, then build and maintain your own community, seems like it might be helpful. Once you build a community, it will tend to naturally include people who have other skills you need (like, say, layout, art, or editing)...

Snarf's Second Annual A24 Film Festival: A Reverie And Recommendations (PLUS Bonus Halloween Films)

Got around to it and enjoyed it. I appreciated going in blind and figuring it out as I went. I agree that it wasn't mind-blowing, but I enjoyed it a good deal.

D&D General D&D Dungeon Map Design: Good and Bad

Definitely. I've run multiple adventures using maps from Dyson and others where a tunnel or sub-section of a dungeon level is hidden behind/connects multiple secret doors, and I generally assume that they're not hidden from the inside of the hidden area.

D&D General D&D Dungeon Map Design: Good and Bad

Yeah. I also like the device of having a trap or secret door early in the dungeon left open/fired, maybe with a body lying in it, as a clue for the PCs to be on the lookout for more. The Lost City is a classic module which does this. Edit: I think a fun variation on this is to do it in a large...

    Our Physical Fitness

Monday night followed the plan, though the leg equipment was surprisingly busy and I wound up subbing a couple of sets of leg press for hack squats: Lat pulldowns (narrow grip) 110x20, 120x16, 120x12 +105x6, 120x10 +105x4 +90x7. Added 3 reps set one, 1 rep set two AND didn't need to rest pause...

What are you reading in 2025?

I saw an ad for the TV show and it looked interesting.

D&D General D&D Dungeon Map Design: Good and Bad

Ah, no. You couldn't automatically detect traps or secret doors in TSR versions of D&D. You've misremembered the rules and are conflating four different ones in this bit. Dwarves in OD&D, AD&D, B/X and BECMI have an enhanced ability to find "room traps" (as B/X labels them) while actively...

    Cocktails

Last night my date requested something with a bit of holiday spirit, and I didn't have any specific ingredients so did a little googling based on what I had on hand. Wound up settling on an Enchanted Forest: 2 oz gin 1 oz green Chartreuse ½ oz fresh lemon juice ½ oz honey syrup Ice cubes Fresh...

    Our Physical Fitness

I rested Friday and Saturday, then a dead car battery delayed things on Sunday but I still got in a workout. Just had to hurry a bit on the rest and didn't make time for legs. Committing to hit legs this evening! Sunday 12/7: Smith inclined barbell bench 70x23, 90x11 +80x5, 90x9 +80x5 +70x4...

    What's the best potato?

Crisps can be great with a sandwich or something. But they don't stand up as a pure showcase of potatoes the way most of these other options do.

What are you reading in 2025?

Reminds me of a theme from one of Pratchett's Discworld books. Definitely a good message for kids. I long for that Vess-illustrated edition.

D&D General D&D Dungeon Map Design: Good and Bad

My groups started using a 5' grid (though usually hexes) in the 90s too, during 2nd ed. We were happy with how battlemats cut down on confusion and arguments about positioning. Yes, I think space is one of the big factors. When I ran Graphite Prime's Praise the Fallen for a convention game...

Agreed. Thankfully most of his are designed to be a 10' square map scale.

D&D General D&D Dungeon Map Design: Good and Bad

The first core D&D book to suggest a 5' grid for tactical use with miniatures was 1981 Moldvay Basic. But when "Standard" dungeon exploration map scale went from 10' squares to 5' squares is a bit less clear, at least to me. I do have a vague sense that it was around the 3e transition, but I...

    What's the best potato?

I dig mashed parsnips better than mashed potatoes. Though braised in duck fat and sherry and orange juice (alongside a duck and with other root vegetables) may be their perfect state.
