D&D General Favorite builds for noobs?

True, but my real point is that if you build a character to the scenario and background of the campaign, the class and species will sort themselves out. If the scenario given by the DM for the game is "guards protecting a caravan heading to an elven enclave"... it won't do a whole lot of good...

D&D General Help with Names for Custom Feats Related to Ability Scores

I could come up with some good adjectives for them, but nouns were harder when trying to keep the same initial letter. Strongman or Stalwart (Strength) Dynamo (Dexterity) Conditioner (Constitution) Inventor (Intelligent) Wiseman (Wisdom) Charmer (Charisma)

WotC WotC Winter 2026 D&D Community Survey

Are you kidding? The "community" can't agree on a gosh-darned thing. There would be zero things the "community" could assist with that would improve anything the designers make. After all... you got all kinds of players who only see D&D as a miniatures combat game and want every ability...

D&D General Favorite builds for noobs?

I would find out what the starting scenario was for the campaign and then make a character that was directly related to it. That way my PC was always going to have a front row seat to all the action that the DM was preparing for. Then I'd choose the class and species that would lend itself best...

What mechanics or subsystems do you use regardless of the game you are running/playing?

Nope, never concern myself with playing a game "as written". Because RAW is overrated. To me, RPGs are story-generators, not board games. So hewing only to the game mechanics misses the point in playing RPGs in my opinion. Different RPGs give us different ways to generate stories, sure, but...

D&D General Are you content with what you have in DnD regarding physical/digital material?

I'm fine. I still have all my 3E and 4E books, countless Dragon mags (both physical and online), and so many websites bookmarked and 3PP products purchased that if there's anything I could possibly need to introduce into any 5E24 game of mine, I can just grab it and make a few adjustments to...

What mechanics or subsystems do you use regardless of the game you are running/playing?

During character creation for any game that doesn't already have something similar, I give everyone the Hubris table from 7th Sea 1st edition so that everyone can select their one "fatal flaw" for their character that they can easily play. I have found that when players have a single "character...

D&D General Design issues with 5e

Nothing wrong with playing games that fit your preferences better. Always the best option.

D&D General Design issues with 5e

Yeah, and that's their problem, not WotC's. WotC can stay with updating 5E or create a 6E or do whatever they decide to do over the next ten, fifteen years and the players out there will deal with it just like they always have. Playing the game while complaining about the game, LOL. WotC knows...

D&D General Design issues with 5e

Except they won't really lose that many. Because as we have seen for decades, so many people stick with D&D regardless of how the game plays when they could have moved on to any number of different games that better suited them. And they get past that by just showing up here to complain about...

D&D General Design issues with 5e

Well, based upon all the responses we have seen thus far, the answer appears to be to never bother making a 6E at all because no matter what they do or what individual things they change, it will piss off over half of you, LOL! :D

    Let's Talk About Metacurrency

I've been fine with them ever since I was introduced to them in the Ghostbusters roleplaying game. For me... there is a distinct split between the mechanics of a game and the narrative that we are experiencing at the table. The narrative is what is truly important-- what is happening, what the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Do You Start At Level 1?

Usually level 1 just to give the players a session or two to figure out their characters, but also because sometimes depending on the size of the group I will start the PCs in smaller groups in different sessions to give them more time to have personal playtime at the start, before them all...

D&D 5E (2024) WotC folks guests on Eldritch Lorecast.

Yeah, well interacting with the public over social media is probably like pregnancy... you forgot how much pain you were in before when you find yourself going through it again after swearing you never would. ;)

D&D 5E (2014) Your CR limit for an average 1st level party?

In addition... with a 4 PC group, an attack that begins with going after the healer full force will be a much harder and probably deadlier fight than one where the monster and tank square off (and the healer can remain upright to cast healing spells as needed.)

D&D 5E (2024) WotC folks guests on Eldritch Lorecast.

The new staff probably haven't been burned yet by the general public's insatiable need to be jerks to them on social media when they don't get their way, like the previous staff regime had been. ;) Give it time. They will go radio-silent on all things D&D soon enough, LOL!

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Is Now OFFICIALLY Called "5.5e"

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Is Now OFFICIALLY Called "5.5e"

Yeah, the issues being some people not getting WotC to do things the way they want them to be. ;) That's the most important thing for most of the player base, LOL.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Is Now OFFICIALLY Called "5.5e"

Nope, it's just the same old same old we've seen here for decades. Just pointing it out doesn't make one "excited"... it makes them "observant".

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Is Now OFFICIALLY Called "5.5e"

Some folks kept calling the game 5.5, even though the publishers at the time said it was just 5E. But they didn't care if it was "wrong" and did it anyway. Now that they aren't "wrong" anymore... I do hope they are fully prepared for a bunch of people to STILL continue to call it 5E or 5E 2024...
