    The Fair Folk

For me, fey creatures have these characteristics: 0. Not explicitly from the Outer Planes, Elemental Planes, etc. 1. strong connection to nature or natural places 2. magical nature or magic abilities 3. abilities related to illusion, trickery, charm, or nature 4. generally humanoid in...

    Sudden Death

I dunno, I've run memorable campaigns that haven't had significant risks: the focus was on characterization more than death-defying adventure. Granted, that is more unusual for a D&D game, but it's there, to be sure. Another type of memorable game I run: light-hearted or outright humorous...

D&D 5E Is it finally time..

That sounds nice, Starfyre. There are several game systems that dealt with armor this way--I think Palladium did, back in the 80s. I could see this being an optional module. I think 3.5's UA had rules for this, no? Only the DR part?

    D&D 5E Poll: What is a Level 1 PC?

Thanks for the replies, and for guiding this back to the original discussion. I really like PCs to have a more-likely-than-not chance of winning a standard 1st level encounter. I remember some early Blue Box and AD&D games where the adventure was over in 1 or 2 encounters. I was a player (and...

    D&D 5E Poll: What is a Level 1 PC?

And how does 4e monster design relate to the relative power level of 1st level PCs?

D&D 5E Is it finally time..

The rules were for field and full plate (and magic versions thereof), and they were in the AD&D UA, as noted above. I tried using them when they came out, but gave up: we forgot the DR sometimes, forgot the armor hp sometimes, and so on. A lot of bucks, but not a lot of bang.

D&D 5E Is it finally time..

Welp, it didn't stick in late AD&D for a reason, folks. It's too fiddly for D&D.

    D&D 5E Poll: What is a Level 1 PC?

So, how 'bout them 1st level PCs?

D&D 5E Is it finally time..

    I guess not.

D&D 5E Is it finally time..

No one else here used the armor DR and hp rules from AD&D?

D&D 5E Is it finally time..

Armor with DR and hp was tried out with the introduction of Field Plate and Full Plate back in AD&D 1.5 (Unearthed Arcana). It was a very annoying extra step in every combat.

    D&D 5E Maybe I'm just tired?

My fears have already been discussed above: 1. Complexity will grow so much that the core rules are closer to 3e or 4e than BECMI 2. 5e won't be successful enough for Hasbro (maybe because Hasbro won't give it the marketing budget it deserves) and the game simply fails

    D&D 5E Poll: What is a Level 1 PC?

I think that first level PCs should be different than average NPCs in two ways: 1. Class features. PCs should, at level 1, have at least a couple class features that normal folks don't have. A warrior should have a fighting style specialty, and the herbalist isn't casting cure light...

    D&D 5E Healing Options Poll

I like the variant with the slowest natural healing: spend hit dice during short rest or long rest regain hit dice only during long rest--but no automatic "up to full" I want heroic natural healing, but I don't want it as easy as in 4e.

    D&D with checkpoints?!

I think this is a good idea for groups that want a.) Very lethal games b.) A game with some mechanics from video games I have a D&D club at the high school I teach in. New players sometimes ask questions like, "Can my hero come back if killed?" or "How many lives do I get?" "Ohnoes!" you...

    Short People

They look like cartoon characters. No thanks.

    D&D 5E Poll: What is a Level 1 PC?

Why not have those classes? Those classes take design time and book space.

D&D 5E On Healing and Broccoli

I just wish healing were divorced from divine casting. Just be done with it. Arcane magic can heal, too. White wizards and such. That way, casters can be described by theme (serving a deity, studying magic), rather than by type of spell (healing, damage).

    D&D 5E Poll: What is a Level 1 PC?

Of course, many players never make that connection, or rather, are not interested in making that connection, particularly in a fantasy RPG. When I make a halfling rogue, I am not imagining a version of myself.
