    What's the best potato?

Canned potatoes are cheap and preserve for a long time. The ones I've used have already been peeled, which cuts down a step in preparation, especially since they tend to be smaller, silver dollar size, which are a real pain to peel. The one's I've used are maybe a hair softer but still firm...

    Anticipatory Grief

Your kitty will make New Years. Cats are survivors: she'll give you some scares but she'll bounce back, for a while at least. We've done pet chemo twice (and radiation once) ... it's a roller coaster, and not a particularly fun one.

    What's Atop Your Christmas Tree?

We alternate between a Sheltie Angel and a Santa. It's Sheltie Angel this year. It's the dog, not the angel, that matters.

D&D General Wild Magic, Yea or Nay?

Meh. Not generally a fan. Mechanically I'm not a fan of random player mechanics; when a player makes a decision or uses an ability it's shouldn't be random what or if it works -- the outcome can be uncertain (attack roll, saving throw, etc) but the execution should not be. It has its place I...

    Whamageddon (Last) Christmas

The imp on my shoulder suggested it, but I decided I like winning less than not being evil.

Cut to the chase: deep-fried bacon-wrapped cheese sticks.

Worlds of Design: The Warship Trinity

Here I thought "Trinity" was the name of the starship. I worked in combat vehicle design & development; we never used the term "trinity." We instead used the term "Iron Triangle" for mobility, protection, and firepower.

    Whamageddon (Last) Christmas

Haven't listen to randomized music in quite a while, so three days into December I'm still going. So far this year the only Christmas music we've had is stuff I've played myself (I'm teaching myself the recorder).

    What's the best potato?

Yukon Gold. Or are you asking for the best potato recipe? I'm confused.

    D&D 5E (2024) The Dalelands & Myth Drannor : Are they inseparable ?

Ran a multi-year campaign sandbox in the Dalelands; the players never once went near Myth Drannor. They went into the Underdark instead.

    The Secret of Weepstone

Played through the demo and had a blast, even though a few combats felt very BD&D with their flurry of misses. The exploration, puzzle/trick, and combat mix were about right for a B/X game. I'll be interested to see how the "return to town" dynamics work, assuming they have some.

    The Secret of Weepstone

Just tripped over this new digital dungeon crawler ... free demo on Steam pending release of the game. Has a very OSR feel with the black & white art and old mechanics. It also reminds me of playing Eye of the Beholder back in the day. Video intro:

    Should traps have tells?

Yes. Otherwise they're just a random "gotcha". Might as well roll a d20 every couple of turns and on a 1 kill a character.
