The Flash vs Arrow - in a league of their own

FWIW, Arrow is on hulu.com for free. I suspect it's also on demand, depending on your cable package. I much preferred 'The Brave and the Bold' to The Flash vs. Arrow. Mostly because I was't a fan of the whole idea of the Flash being mind controlled or whammied so he fights Arrow. I hate that...

D&D 5E Treasure Tables (or, how much gold DOES that goblin have?)

Excellent question. Let's see if I can answer it. Not as such. What they have are random treasure table and, from that, I think we can extrapolate a range. The individual treasure tables (i.e., the treasure that just a single monster might have) are just cash, no magic items. For example, the...

D&D 5E Non fantasy setting book or books for 5th edition

Sci-Fi, then modern. Personally, I'd like to see an sf system with classes/archetypes like what they did in Alternity.

D&D 5E How We Beat the HD, HotDQ, Spoilers

FWIW, the group I DM for Encounters on Wednesdays beat the HD, but I didn't run the encounter as it was presented in the adventure. When I read the episode, I hated both the half-dragon and Blue Dragon encounters. So I talked to my long time friend and D&D player about them. He suggested that I...

D&D 5E When Monsters and NPCs take a Short Rest

How many HD can they spend to heal? I see several likely answers: Zero, because monsters can't spend HD the way PCs can. Up to all their HD as listed in their statblock, but can't go higher than the HP listed in the statblcok. Up to all their HD as listed in their statblock, but can go higher...

D&D 5E Do magic missiles automatically hit

I don't think it's poorly worded at all. First, the point of abilities like Assassinate is to give the PC a critical hit when they typically wouldn't. That includes Magic Missile. Second, given the ruckus over Magic Missile in 4e's Essentials, I think the designers of the game, and the...

I'm not sure I had one. Sure, meet me in Deadhorse, Alaska in a week. Dress warmly.

This just isn't my day. That said, I'm stealing my own idea born out of misunderstanding. :D

D&D 5E Do magic missiles automatically hit

I really like this idea of how wizard students learn. I don't know what reasoning was given for giving Wizard students a 1st level slot before they have access to cantrips. But I can see how, before you internalize a simple spell (or three) you have to learn how to cast slightly more powerful...

D&D 5E Do magic missiles automatically hit

Nope. I did leave a word out though. Should have read: I sincerely hope that was the third time those wizard's had done that. Wizards get two first level slots at first level, but can recover one slot after a short rest. If they'd cast three magic missile three times, they'd be reduced to...

D&D 5E Wotc needs to clean up retail shelves

"Excuse me ma'am, could you tell me which edition of D&D I should start with?" Oh noes! Not Pathfinder! Oh man, they might buy a 2nd Ed PHB! How are they ever going to play! Especially if they play sports titles... I think 2e was meant to be somewhat compatible with 1e. IIRC, TSR was selling...

D&D 5E 5th edition Monster Manual: I think the really nice art detracts from the mediocre functionality of the book.

This really confuses me. Like what are you afraid monster creation is going to take the place? What's not going to be in the DMG that you would rather have than monster creation? They could have, but I prefer that they did this. Had they done it your way, I'd be complaining that to many of my...

D&D 5E 5th edition Monster Manual: I think the really nice art detracts from the mediocre functionality of the book.

If you're a player, you likely only need the PHB to play. You don't need the MM for the vast majority of animals you might need stats for. That's how it's a complete game. Of course, I don't know how you achieve that without flipping around. Like, if you need to look-up a spell and then a...

D&D 5E 5th edition Monster Manual: I think the really nice art detracts from the mediocre functionality of the book.

It's interesting to me that innate spellcasting is a variant for dragons.

D&D 5E 5th edition Monster Manual: I think the really nice art detracts from the mediocre functionality of the book.

There's like two books out and you're complaining that you have to flip through them? Like how? The PHB is pretty much a complete game. Heck, it has it's own monster section for mounts, familiars, and shape changing druids. Also, monster creation most definitely belongs in the DMG.

D&D 5E 5th edition Monster Manual: I think the really nice art detracts from the mediocre functionality of the book.

Monsters by CR can be found on Wizard's Website. Making monsters will be in the DMG. The MM is mostly a catalog. I actually find this the most useful Monster Manual since the 3.5 MM, and in some ways, it's a great deal better.

D&D 5E The 5th edition PHB: Sorry but when it comes to functionality, it deserves a 'one star' rating.

You have hit on an interesting tension in D&D game design: when should something be a trait and when should it be a spell? This has been a question since at least 3e, which had spells pull quadruple duty as spells, spell-like abilities, supernatural abilities, and (sometimes) extraordinary...
