D&D General Harshest House Rule (in use)?

Personally I don't like fumble tables. They tend to be too harsh to the characters and often just feel unnecessary.

    Quest into Feywild. Strangeness ensued.

Payn's Ponderings; System mastery and the concept of fair fight.

I'm not one for system mastery. Optimisation isn't always the way to go. There are discussions on these very forums from twenty years ago when one of my friends in our D&D3 campaign started to cause issues because he optimised and the rest of us didn't play that way. I much prefer a simpler...

    Death of Player Characters

As a DM for many decades, my view has always been that I want the characters (and likewise, their players during game) to have a fear that death is just a dice roll away. I don't however, want to kill their characters. I just want the players to have that feeling that it could happen. I don't...

Describe your last rpg session in 5 words

    Evil villain defeated. Campaign won.

D&D General To Prep or Not to Prep - A Players Perspective

Salient. That is what I do as a DM and all I expect from a prospective DM.

    D&D (2024) Party Balance?

Agreed. Early 3rd edition my experience was everyone toe dipped into Rogue for one level just to get D6 sneak attack and evasion. Once evasion was moved to 3rd level, players stopped doing it.

    D&D (2024) Party Balance?

The classic fighter, rogue, cleric and wizard/sorcerer party is a classic trope for a reason. It covers all your bases. It's what I would recommend for most new players and even some experienced groups. Fighter - good but can easily be replaced by barbarian, paladin or even melee focused ranger...

What is/are your most recent TTRPG purchase(s)?

    Thanks. I'll take a look. :)

What is/are your most recent TTRPG purchase(s)?

Next I want Curse of Strahd to collect some updated classic D&D. I take it Temple of Elemental Evil hasn't been updated since 3rd edition?

What is/are your most recent TTRPG purchase(s)?

I got it for £55 GBP so about $70 US. That still felt rather excessive to me but frequently I was seeing it online for nearly double that. No idea why.

What is/are your most recent TTRPG purchase(s)?

Just managed to get a copy of Ghosts of Saltmarsh on eBay (Ye gods! How much does that book go for? Crazy prices!) ready for when I start a new 5.5 campaign in a couple months.

Worlds of Design: Why Buy Adventures?

I buy adventures occasionally because they are usually something easy too pick up, read and run when I need something. Or they are great sources for ideas or maps that I can use in my own games. These days I don't have a lot of time to write my own things and a published adventure or campaign...

D&D General Of Consent, Session 0 and Hard Decisions.

I'm not a fan of the idea of consent forms or what have you. I've had grief before because on certain social media pages, I have said that are we not all adults and can we not handle such within the confines of a game? If someone, a new person coming into the group or at a convention... etc...

    D&D (2024) Backgrounds

I plan on letting the players create their own by letting them choose where their stat boosts go, and what origin feat, skills and tools. Something we can work on together to create what they want.

Daggerheart to Release Spring 2025, Pre-Orders Available Now

I was really stoked for Daggerheart initially and I loved our first playtest but each subsequent rules alteration striped that really quickly. Now, I've lost interest and it looks like D&D 5.5 will do the job for what I want. Shame but there it is.

D&D (2024) can people give themselves Heroic inspiration with musician feat?

I'd say and rule, that yes, you are your own ally. What could possibly be the issue with doing so? Does it break any aspect of the game? Probably not.

Players Don't Care About Your Setting

My players aren't interested in anything but the basics and even then, they would prefer to learn it in game. Shame. For me personally, give me a 50 page PDF and I'll read it thoroughly, print it out and bring to the game. To me, knowing the setting is a priority.

    D&D (2024) Backgrounds Idea - opinions desired :)

Not an adventurer's guild specifically but there is a mercenaries guild that basically can fulfil that same role. I do really like the idea of that. I hadn't considered that option. That could work to then assist the player in guiding their character to pick and join a guild at some point. Nice...

D&D General What class is this character, and is she wearing armor?

Sorcerer or Rogue, wearing leather armour.
