Why do so many campaigns never finish? Genuinely curious what others think

I've been lucky that in most of my adulthood playing RPGs, starting in college (so discounting middle school and HS days), I have had a pretty dedicated core group of players (though that core group changed about once per decade). So while occasionally one person dropped out or disappeared, we...

    D&D 5E (2024) New Campaign: Should I make the switch to 5.5?

This. Except replace ToV with Level Up A5E or whatever other flavor of 5e or all of the above mixed and matched.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

When someone says a book is about a singular thing and nothing else (or that is all that matters to "understand" it), I know I can probably safely discount their opinion on literature or most pieces of art/culture.

What is the single best science fiction novel of all time?

Ursula K. LeGuin's "The Left Hand of Darkness."

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Oh yeah, to me everything after "objectively" is just a Charlie Brown adult talking.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

There may be no word I detest to hear more when discussing D&D than "should."

Fighting the Gray Tide (Miniature Painting)

I personally usually do washes at the end, but I do (very) occasionally dry brush parts of a mini afterwards - but I am far from an expert painter, I just do what works for me.

D&D 5E (2014) Your CR limit for an average 1st level party?

A monster they can't avoid? Probably CR 2. A monster that has been telegraphed and they have a chance to avoid or parley with? No limit really.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Don't you hate when you mean to post about something in this thread in a vague or general fashion but you accidentally post it in the thread it is about where it is 100% obvious? Oops! :sneaky::p

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

A refreshing moment in the in-person D&D game I play in with a new DM and 3 other players who are also new (I purposefully made a character who takes a backseat to others and often says "Tell me when it is time to smash stuff) upon being questioned by guards as we entered Waterdeep as to if...

Poll: VTT Users - Do you prefer self-hosted or cloud-based VTTs?

Owlbear Rodeo has everything I need and I don't care about self-hosting. I encourage all my players to use paper character sheets (which they do) and I even let them roll their own dice (b/c i don't play with people I don't trust). Also, in my experience, the more bells and whistles a VTT has...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Is Now OFFICIALLY Called "5.5e"

Given all that has happened in my life and in the world since then, 2024 already seems like a decade ago sometimes, so yeah, what Charlaquin said. Plus, not sure why it matters or anyone cares, but since while I would grab rules from it, I am not planning on playing it as a complete ruleset, my...

    D&D 3.x I miss 3.5 edition

I played 3.xE for 16+ years from when it first came out (2000 to 2016). I was not into all the 3.5 changes, so I just added what I liked from 3.5 but kept along with the 3.0 chassis (with the caveat that I house rule every version of D&D I play from Day One and never look back). I never even...

Fighting the Gray Tide (Miniature Painting)

I have never played Warhammer, but have considered getting back into Necromunda, which I loved back in the day and was surprised to find out still gets regularly played at the local hobby shop.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

I kinda feel the opposite, wherein the more I flip back and forth the more I think that most of these folk would probably be more amenable to compromise in real life (where getting along has more social cachet) as opposed to “saving face” on the internet.

I’ve got two pairs of those guys + various other frog and toad people. Always been a fave.

D&D 5E (2024) How do you handle surprised but won initiative?

I went in the other direction and in my games attacks against surprised creatures are made with Advantage (though only for the first round). (And in my experience while some characters might get two rounds of actions before the surprised get to act, generally most don’t).
