The rest of the party appreciates it if I don't start the game in Cyberpsychosis.
Cannot start a Cthulu character with a pre-existing hatred of books, altars and cutlery.
Even if the rules allow it, I cannot start the game as pope.
One GM that I had used a random table to create life events, prior to the start of game play in Cyberpunk. He was flavouring it with some sort of horror campaign setting stuff he found online. Seemed that my Fixer character had two separate events. very close together, that seemed to work in concert; developing a psychosis and a religious epiphany. So now I've go a Fixer who thinks he's an avatar of god. For some reason this character had the best die rolls I can ever remember having consistently in any RPG. Facing a vampire? Yeah, who cares about fear rolls. Ghosts? They're just dead people. Were creatures? Screw it, I'm holy. Now they're hole-y.

Maybe not as a title, but just declare your parents were both named Pope before they got married, decided to hyphenate it, and then pulled a Catch-22 Major Major Major Major thing and made your first and middle names Pope and Pope. You can at least start as Pope Pope Pope-Pope.

Don't fancy your odds of getting into a Catholic seminary school without using a fake name though. Little too obvious whose job you're gunning for there. :)

Yeah, I've worked with several people who had clearly stopped giving a crap about getting better at their jobs decades before retirement. I would go insane just plateauing and not trying harder or learning new things, but it takes all types, I guess.
It’s surprisingly easy, and if you’re in the right industry, can be fairly lucrative.

Challenge is for video games. :)

Oh, it clearly works for some people. It would just make me nuts, personally. It's not really a judgement on those people. The nicest guy I ever worked with hadn't learned anything new or pushed himself in 30 years by the time he retired. He got to a notch or two above competent and clearly decided that was where he wanted to be.

Being bored at work is what ENWorld is for! :)

Yeah, same way, but I do sometimes get burned out with the continue efforts to improve or just stay current. When I think of all time and money I've spent over the years acquiring and maintaining various licenses and certifications, and then see people riding things out on a similar salary, I sometimes think I need to treat my personal life less like a TTRPG character sheet and work on a more balanced lifestyle.

Why in blazes are we calling these things funnels? You know, the adventures where you take a bunch of utterly unqualified characters and shove them through a dangerous situation until most of them die (often hilariously) and then the survivors get to be real PCs from then on? Essentially a winnowing process for aspiring adventurers, most popular in the more DCC-flavored parts of the OSR community.

That's not how a funnel works. If I pour thirty ounces of a substance into my funnel I'd better get thirty ounces out of it, not four with rest being eaten by monsters. It's not even a meat grinder, where I still expect to get about two pounds of ground beef out if I shove two pounds of chuck in. The terminology is all wrong.

This is really alluvial mining here. You're panning for player characters. The dungeon isn't a funnel, it's a mining sluice, disposing of the hopeless sand and unlucky gravel and leaving you a precious handful of viable PCs. It's just using the blood of its victims instead of water to do the job, which is a mental image I'm sure funnel-lovers would appreciate.

So no more funnels. Let's start seeing modules like "Blood Sluice of the Gore Mages" and debates about whether sluices are a terrible idea or not and whether the whole concept is truly Old School or modern parody based on faux nostalgia. :)
Thank you for validating one of my pet peeves. In my industry it is common to see vendors using the word funnel and funnel graphics to explain how there great new software platform will better filter your ocean of data get you to the valuable and actionable information you need. SO JUST CALL IT A FILTER!

Though for DCC, maybe "meat grinder" would be appropriate. Though if I buy a meat grinder and the occasional hunk of flesh gets through unground, I wouldn't be happy with the product. But maybe trying to shove live creatures through it is not its intended use? Nah.

None of the games that include funnels actually require them. It's just that funnel proponents are often extremely loud about how they're the "only" way to play the game.
Well, I check two of those three attributes: extreme and loud proponent. But nope to the "only" way. I'm also an extreme and loud proponent of their being no "only" way.
