D&D (2024) New D&D Edition's Player’s Handbook Alternate Art Cover Reveal

Alternate Player's Handbook cover art by Wylie Beckert.

Polygon revealed the alternate art for the 2024 Player's Handbook.

"Illustrated by Wylie Beckert, the alt art cover of the Player’s Handbook (2024) features a party comprised of D&D’s four iconic classes — the fighter, the wizard, the cleric, and the rogue — all gathered around a friendly gold dragon, sharing tea. This gentle scene stands in stark contrast to the mainline Player’s Handbook (2024), which will have a bright, bold cover by Tyler Jacobsen with similar characters posed in the moments before striking a blow."

Reminds me a bit of the artist behind Dragonbane.
Reminds me a lot of Mark Zug. He used to do a lot of art in Dungeon and Dragon back in the 00's and earlier.

errr.... I think I have the wrong name. Gotta go take a look at my old Dragon magazines and find the artist I'm thinking of.

Wow. Totally spaced on that name. The artist I was thinking of is Chuck Lukacs.

Must go punish my brain now.

Sorry, meant the cover and not the dragon. He wants the very colorful cover with the people riding one.
I forgot about the dragon riders on the back of the standard cover. I wish I could get the alt cover with the dragon rider illustration from standard back cover included somewhere inside.

I think this one is really sweet ... it's a little self-referential, the whole "we're having a long rest" scene really only makes sense if you already know that D&D is supposed to be about action adventures and that this is what happens in between, but really, who doesn't know? It's just nice to see D&D characters (and a gold dragon!) humanized in this way. They're not wielding big blades, getting ready to kick some serious ass. They're drinking tea. Let's kick some ass tomorrow again. Tonight, just give me a cup of tea and a good book.

I liked the standard cover well enough, but oh damn do I love this one! There’s an understated, almost melancholy quality to it that, while not what I typically associate with D&D, is very much up my alley when it comes to fantasy art. I hope the other core books get similar treatments.
It gives me "lofi art girl" from YouTube vibes. Less melancholy (to me anyway), more chill.

I quite like it as well.

Note: Bonus points for including both a dungeon and a dragon on the cover. Curiosity points(?) for featuring neither swords nor sorcery.

Yeah, it’s not exactly melancholy (which is why I said “almost,”) but… maybe “wistful” would be a better term for it? “Contemplative?” I dunno, there’s a quiet calmness to it that appeals to me a great deal.

And that's my issue with it: it is not going to jive with anything in the book itself, which makes it a poor cover choice no matter how cool the art is on its own.
