D&D (2024) New D&D Edition's Player’s Handbook Cover Reveal

Game Informer has revealed the cover to the 2024 Player’s Handbook.

Game Informer has revealed the cover to the 2024 Player’s Handbook.

The cover features a gold dragon behind the old-school D&D characters Strongheart the paladin, Mercion the cleric, Elkhorn the dwarf fighter, and Molliver the thief. Ringlerun the wizard is absent (then again he got his showcase on one of the 1E AD&D Player's Handbooks), but a drow mage appears to have joined the party!

I'm not a fan of Tyler's art style, the messy unfinished edges, but it still looks good and says DnD. Trad 4 classes... And a dwarf. I do like his back page one on the back of the dragon, the guy with the axe looks terrified! There is also some great location art in the article, really varied and interesting. I'm looking forward to seeing it all

Eh. Looks generic IMO.

Makes me think they want me to download fantasy themed card game onto my phone. 50 Free Pulls! Download now! *includes in-app purchases
You're not wrong, but that's to be expected, isn't it? The "generic medieval fantasy game setting*" was basically invented by D&D, and now exists in an incestuous cycle where D&D and fantasy MMOs copy each other's homework back and forth.

*This setting, incidentally, is actually not generic at all but quite specific: A cosmopolitan setting with multiple sapient humanoid species, always including pointy-eared elves and axe-wielding dwarves; a laundry list of beasties cribbed mostly from Greek mythology with a sprinkling of Norse and Celtic; widespread use of flashy obvious magic; and Renaissance-era technology which may or may not include firearms. It's a painfully narrow slice of the vast sweep of settings found in fantasy fiction... but I'll get off my soapbox before this footnote turns into a foot-rant.

It works for Star Wars. And Marvel and DC. And Transformers, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and He-Man, and My Little Pony, and...

Well, I think you get the idea.
Star Wars, Marvel and DC have all been clowned on for the better part of a decade for their behavior and they're all at relative low points in their franchise history. Actually of all those brands you mentioned the only one that I think is on the upswing is TMNT, in part because Mutant Mayhem was somewhat unique.

Replace "AT-ST" with "Melf" and we're basically here:

Oh the couldn't restrain themselves and printed that "The World's Greatest Roleplaying Game" line even more prominent (an in colour to both) on the book.

As a non native English speaker I am never sure if the talk about sales numbers or quality of the game here. This fist is correct the second arrogant.

And it says something about a company that feels the need to do this. If its polite or impolite can everyone choose for themselves.... ;)
I didn't even notice they had that on the cover. That knocks this one down to my least favorite cover.
