I just don't get the hype around Cowboy Beebob. I saw the first anime, it started out decent, then turned boring, then turned depressing AND boring. We did finish watching it, but just barely.
For me, in a sea of cringe anime (unrealistic woman, harem BS, whiney/insecure protagonists, etc.), Cowboy Bebop stands out as being "cool". Easy to recommend to "normie" adults interested in anime.

Also, that jazzy soundtrack and fighting animation is just perfect, haha.

I kind of avoided anime for decades for no particular reason. But I finally watched Cowboy Bebop five or six years ago, and enjoyed it a lot more than I expected. The low-key noir vibe plus the really great soundtrack is what appealed to me, i think.

I avoided anime since speed racer and battle of the planets 40+ years ago :)

Having kids changed that last year. Some is dopey but it’s a fun shared activity.

I too felt cowboy bebop avoided the sillier elements that don’t appeal to me. Then again, I find myself trying to learn the names of one piece characters to amuse the kids…

Cowboy Bebop is excellent. I also enjoy MushiShi, which does everything you describe but has a soothing, mellow soundtrack instead of a jazzy one.

Fullmetal Alchemist is pretty good too, and it manages to avoid most of these tropes (well, except for the whiney protagonist, but they thin it out a bit by having several protagonists.)

I would have happily bought things at your specialty retail store, and I get that you might like to work 8-5 like I do... but holy !%!@ $20 shipping fee for in town!?!? Big box store order it is.
