It just occurred to me that by moving Spelljammer to the Astral, it integrates the Gith and Illithid races to Spelljammer in a very rational manner.
Yeah this is part of why people had been anticipating the move. It actually makes far more sense. The original setup was bizarrely convoluted and I suspect the result of reading too much Space: 1889 or something!

Yeah. I called it as Planejammer back when the UA came out. Lotta folks argued with me that it was only Spelljammer, but the inclusion of Astral Elves, as well as the ship that travelled between planes in Minsc and Boo indicated Planejammer.
Which got me to thinking that Spelljammer ships can be used in the Outlands. However, the ships require magic to operate. There fore they can't be used the closer to the Spire you get. But near the Gate Towns and Outer Edges, you could field and fuel vast armadas of Planejammer ships, each fleet modeled according to its Outer Plane source.

Imagine Blood War naval battles. Every mythology has their own Divine ships. First to come to mind are Egyptian, Norse And Carthage. it would be a great way to introduce mass combat in Spelljammer.

yeah - I started thinking about this the other day when there was a conversation in another thread about Spelljamming through the Astral to the outer planes. Flying ships in the outer few "rings" of the Outlands would make planar warfare even messier, and spark some need for adventurers to come in and save some Gate Towns.

I also have been rereading The Plane Above and a central conceit of that book is that the exarchs of the gods on the various outer planes all have their own flotillas and war with each other in the Astral Sea - I think that idea could work even if you just want to use the Great Wheel too.

The Plane Below is great, too. Between those two and the Manual of Planes, there's a lot of content waiting to be used for 5E Spelljammer.

The Second Command (baatezu navy) exists for a reason.
