Check D&D Wiki for 5e Homebrew material. There are two homebrewed versions of the boomerang. One under Simple Ranged Weapons, the other under Martial Melee Weapons (Bladed Boomerang). The homebrewed Bola is under Martial Ranged Weapons.

One day, I hope to actually play DnD.
Something I whipped up,
Boomerang-Martial Ranged Weapon, (standard) [edged]
Weight: (1lb) [1lb]
Price: (1gp) [2gp]
Damage: (bludgeoning-1d4) [slashing-1d6]
Properties: Light, Finesse, Thrown (30/65) [20/50],
Special: When this weapon is thrown you can target and make separate attacks on up to (4)/[3] targets within range so long as all the targets are within (25ft)/[15ft] of each other total distance, You must use either your Bonus Action or Reaction to catch the Boomerang on its return otherwise it will fall to the ground 1d4x5ft past you in a line from the direction of the last target it was targeted at.

I like the idea of hitting another target, but feel that as written is a bit powerful. I would be better with allowing another target, but it does not come back to you as the trade-off.

I would also just let you catch it as a free action. Maybe add something about if you move, then it is a bonus action, but that may just add unneeded complications. In my games , I tend to have magical ranged weapons like daggers and hand axes return when thrown anyways. I would not want things more complicated or damaging than that.

FYI actual hunting/war boomerang's didn't return to the thrower. Those are recreation/sport boomerangs, so I am not looking for a "return" feature for it.

What makes you consider it as overly powerful? I don’t have the greatest grasp of what makes good balance as I have little experience with practical application of the mechanics.
I guess using additional action economy beyond the action to make the attack might be a little much but as a martial mid-ranged multi-target weapon with low damage die that can be used once a round due to thrown I thought it was fairly balanced, I was debating if it should only hit 3/2 times per throw but thought that felt underwhelming personally.
I’d rather keep the returning trait outright rather than have a chance for it to fail to, while I know it is less realistic boomerangs are perceived as ‘the returning weapon’, otherwise you might as well just be throwing a club or a knife.

Bolas
Type: Exotic (or Simple) Ranged Weapon Cost: 1 gp Weight: 2 lb

Proficiency with a Bolas allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.

A Large or smaller creature hit by a Bolas is Grappled until it is freed. A Bolas has no Effect on Creatures that are formless, or Creatures that are Huge or larger. A creature can use its action to make a DC 10 Strength check, freeing itself or another creature within its reach on a success. Dealing 5 slashing damage to the Bolas (AC 10) also frees the creature without harming it, Ending the Effect and destroying the Bolas. When you use an action, Bonus Action, or Reaction to Attack with a Bolas, you can make only one Attack regardless of the number of attacks you can normally make.
