    I don't know about Chartmas...?

    Your "Perfect RPG" Wishlist...

I feel that granularity can be taken too far. Pf2e is granular beyond the point that it would have added value to the game. If it's a superhero game, then make a superhero game and embrace that. If its a game of mortals, make characters mortal. Do not try to hedge bets by pretentiously riding...

Owen KC Stephens has publicly announced that he has been diagnosed with cancer.

From Owen Stephens: Owen KC Stephens 20h · Well, it's official. I have cancer. This was expected at this point. We'll proceed to form a plan for care. [EDIT] Obviously this is going to create yet-more medical bills. Wanna help? This bundle is designed to raise money to help me cover...

WotC WotC general D&D survey just went live.

The old guard doesn't need to buy anything new. They might, but the people entering the community are more important than those who established it.

D&D (2024) What would you put in 1D&D from 4E?

I am starting to value simplification and streamlining less than I used to. It's a good idea in certain contexts, but there's a fine line before a game starts to lose a certain something.

The Hero's Journey pt. 1: Story Arc

My animation instructor in college once told us that “all stories are either, the main character wants something, or the main character wants to get rid of something.” My writing got better after that gem... 😍 He worked with Ray Harryhausen... and later on Flesh Gordon 2. 🤣

The Hero's Journey pt. 1: Story Arc

You can criticize Campbell, doesn't really bother me. In fact like I said I was primarily working from Christian Vogler's book, as I find JC to be inaccessible and somewhat incoherent with what he writes. But the hero's journey most definitely has some relevance, or significant relevance, to...

Listening to old-timers describe RP in the 70s and 80s

I don't know. Unintentionally cheating maybe? There is certainly space for misinterpreting the rules, or playing in a style that is unique. I guess I would have to say that it boils down to motives. You could get the same results by playing the game in an unintended, but honest way that you...

Listening to old-timers describe RP in the 70s and 80s

You are 110% correct. I am talking about culture as much or more than the game.

The Hero's Journey pt. 1: Story Arc

We were discussing that Campbell and well meaning academics try to shoehorn the monomyth model into places where it doesn't belong. Stories like The Big Lebowski and other non traditional narratives. I was saying it's great for hero stories and fantasy/sci fi, but doesn't work as well (if at...

TTRPGs: broken mechanics vs. abusive players

I've had players make the joke in a tongue-in-cheek sort of way, and we all have a cheeky laugh and move on, with or without the copper. What you've described sounds like players I would not want to GM for. Although admittedly I know nothing else of these players.
