    Player skill vs character skill?

Hulk Smash in this case = the typical old school 1/2 orc barbarian with massive muscles that as described by the player would make Dwayne (the Rock) Johnson seem rather petite. If the player insists on Hulk (weight 400 lbs), trying to cross a bridge with a max weight limit of 70lbs, doesn't...

D&D General Mapping: How Do You Do It?

GM <> Player miss communication? GM says left when she means right. Player draws door on north wall when GM said south. While the map is drawn by the players, it supposedly represents what the characters are seeing and drawing out. At least one of the GM/players I game with is very...

    Player skill vs character skill?

I have seen the same with new players and story. Fun to watch. But still, if that player took a Hulk Smash character, no amount of fiction engagement should allow Hulk to delicately sneak across a fragile bridge. That is where the GM needs to explain the choices have consequences concept...

D&D General Mapping: How Do You Do It?

Making players draw out a map is often a huge time sink with few paybacks. Too many times I have watched a GM describe a location, only to see what the player drew and then spend still more time correcting. Erasing takes time. Sad thing is that painfully drawn map is almost never used again...

    Player skill vs character skill?

Another aspect of player skill vs character skill is what about new players? Expecting a 1st time player to know about D&D tropes on traps, seducing the barmaid, etc is probably going to create an ex-D&D player frustrated by the group's expectations. It is almost a certainty that the first...

Worlds of Design: The Hierarchy of Authenticity

It is very likely that PCs might well accept the pain as the price of fame and fortune. In recent versions of D&D/PF, character death is normally a rare thing. Most combats are designed to attrition resources, not kill characters. Most NFL football players accept the risk of severe injury and...

    Should traps have tells?

My assumption is most traps have tells. The fun is if the tell is: 1. Very subtle so that only a character with a specific trap finding ability(racial, trait, feat, spell, other) can find it. 2. Can be spotted by normal characters taking the time to actively look. Perception type check when...

Friday Chat: What Mechanics Do You Steal From A Game To Use In Another?

In the past, my groups experimented with using Star Fleet Battles Impulse Movement charts for D&D/PF combat. It can really change the tactics when each character only moves 1 hex/square per impulse. And can 'fire' any time they want, assuming they have a non-move action left. It has the side...

Twelve trees and green suns; refrences to a real world mythology?

The tree circle could be a variation on the Fairy Circle, commonly of mushrooms. For more southern cultures, green auroras would be rare and might be associated with bad stuff on the way. Then get handed down as green sun instead of green night sky.

RPG Evolution: Gifts Ideas for Your DM (2025)

US folks should note that the GM screen says it fits A4 paper size so the slightly wider US standard letter may be a snug fit. Probably not a huge deal unless you swap sheets often.

    D&D 5E (2024) Ditching the Treasure Treadmill

While the topic is tagged D&D, I really don't care for the Accounting in <game setting> anymore. Played enough Accountants in Space Traveller games. Fun once. Ok the 2nd time. No longer fun. I hate doing my taxes in real life. Don't want to manage double row financial books in my RPG. A...

    Do you observe Thanksgiving?

Don't really observe the 'First Thanksgiving' type of thing. More a bunch of us getting together to share food and catch up. Not an all day Hobbit thing(that sounds cool!) but one meal with a lot of socializing afterwards. Sometimes even some gaming.
