    D&D (2024) What Should D&D 2024 Have Been +

It depends heavily on what I'm pitching. If I want to maintain compatibility with Fifth Edition, I'm sacrificing the sacred cow of the 'Three Core Books'. Rebuild the whole lot - mostly the PHB, DMG, Xanathar's and Tashas, plus some bits from Volo's and Mordekainen's - into five volumes. Core...

D&D General Getting The Gold Out of the Dungeon

It's the boring, but sensible, option. If you want the players to think about doing something else, they need a reason why they can't cut it up. That probably means one of two things. They can't cut it up where it is, because of dungeon inhabitants, the environment, or something. In which case...

D&D General Getting The Gold Out of the Dungeon

It works out to a statue of a human about four metres tall, which is big, but not ridiculously so. I don't know why you'd make it of solid gold, instead of gold sheathing on a skeletal frame, but weird cults are going to do weird cultish things.

D&D 5E With Only 4 Ability Scores, How Would You Handle Spellcasting Abilities (+)

Broadly agree, though I'd go for Might incorporating most of Constitution as well. And probably no bonus to hit points from it. I'd go so far as to cut down to three or four classes, potentially losing the Cleric-type.

    OSR The Monster Overhaul

Been keeping an eye out for these landing, glad I haven't missed the boat this time around!

Social Encounters: Does it Matter What and How PCs Speak to NPCs?

Of course it matters; that's what makes it roleplaying. I don't expect play-acting from my players. I'll treat a scenery-chewing performance of 'Pray, milord, might my companions and I trouble you for a night's lodging?' the same way as 'I ask the Baron nicely if we can spend the night.' Which...

D&D General Maps, Maps, Maps! Dungeons, Ruins, Caverns, Temples, and more... aka Where Dyson Dumps His Maps.

FWIW, I love getting drip-fed the lore of your setting through map commentary. It feels like the kind of world that wants to be adventured in.

D&D General The Resurrection of Mike Mearls Games.

Actually, crunching the numbers on the skills thing, aiming for about a two-thirds success rate means you want the kind of character that's supposed to find the skill check a decent challenge means you want success on an 8 on the die. With the proposed modifiers for a first-level character...

D&D General Does a multiclassed fighter still get the Action Surge Boost at level 17?

Yep, and in practice I think that not scaling Extra Attack is a better design choice overall - though I do still think it's weird the Fighter doesn't get their fourth attack at 17th level, it's probably fine either way and I'm sure the designers had their reasons.

D&D General Does a multiclassed fighter still get the Action Surge Boost at level 17?

This is correct... but feels really weird when compared to casters. At least looking at Extra Attack (and analogous features for other classes) when compared to cantrips. Not only does the fourth cantrip damage die come on at 17th, and the Fighter's fourth attack not until 20th, but also the...

D&D 5E How much should it cost to use a permanent teleportation circle?

If you use the implied AL formula for spellcasting services to determine the cost to establish the circle, it comes out to 127,750 gp to establish the circle. You can argue whether that's a good formula, or whether it's right for any given setting, but the idea isn't terrible - if you had to...

D&D General Edition Changes and Brand Identity: Remembering New Coke

I mean, I've considered the idea of Potions of Catnap. But Cormyrian Marching Powder works as well.

D&D 5E How should hit points be gained? [5E specific]

I really like this idea, but I've never tried it. The big problem with rolling hit points is that, by RAW, you never really do so enough times for the law of averages to kick in until you get to very high levels. If you do it this way, you've rolled more dice for hit points by 6th level than you...

D&D General How Do You "Roll Up" Ability Scores?

I find it interesting when people have '4d6, keep 3' rules, coupled with 'if you roll lower than 72, you can reroll'. Remember, 4d6 keep 3 is supposed to simulate being above average already; it's in comparison to a 'normal' - i.e. non-adventuring - person having 3d6 ability scores. The...

D&D 5E Mere of Dead Men in 5E?

Someone on Reddit did do a 5E port of the Eye of Myrkul module from Dungeon #73, which is the culmination of the five modules starting in #69.
