I love the wheel of Time, but did have issues with 'the Slog', which may be structural as you say. It didnt help that Crossroads of Twilight seemed to run parallel to Winters Heart, rather than covering much new ground. And I found the whole Faile kidnapping dragged on too long / too slowly...

Currently slowly rereading IT. I think i forget how well Stephen King can write about just everyday human horror, even outside of the supernatural stuff. Carrie to me is really about the horrors of bullying, and IT is half Pennywise being a nasty piece of work, and half humans being nasty...

Yeah, you do have a point there, it is an unfortunate state of affairs through. Ideally we'd break the idea of the elves being beautiful and admirable though, as they aren't for most part, Laurana is something of an exception. I dont recall the elves in general being described as that good...

Doesn't it depend ultimately on whether presented as a good or bad thing? In the novels at least it is presented as a bad thing, with some of the more hero types, especially Theros, trying to end it. If presented as being good for the Kagonesti, then I think it'd be a problem.

My understanding of Tolkeins world is that the elves probably tend to good more so than other races, but some notable evil acts were still done by them, like the Kinslayings, Feanor at times, Feanors sons thanks to their oath, Eol and others. They were definitely prideful, but that wasnt shown...

To be fair, WoT was first published 1990. Crystal shard was late 80s, so could be part of a stylistic change.

I think definite parallels with Laurana and Alhana against Luthien, Arwen and Galadriel, though I prefer Tolkiens descriptive language, and I don't think Tolkiens elves were as elitist as the Dragonlance ones, which are particularly so (but true of all the races, each race seems quite xenophobic).

I think Mambas point was that Mamba would be happy with a trimmed down version, so no Disks etc, that would still tell core of story but without mirroring so precisely a certain religion.

But this is after already meeting Lauranas brother, the speaker, many other elves that didnt trigger that response, only Laurana because she is more beautiful than the norm. So doesn't seem like elves being elves, just someone particularly beautiful impacting on others. Also based on passage...
