    D&D 5E (2014) "You Can Do 3 Things" - My Nephew's D&D Houserule

I think I would just change extra attack to extra die of damage if I used this house rule. It's cool that their experimenting with the rules.

    D&D General What's your view on a pirate-driven campaign?

At times it can be. I used Control Water with a cleric to take an entire ship out of combat with a Cleric one time. Any wizard or druid could do the same if they're 7th level or higher. While I've never seen it I've heard a similar thing happened in a season of CR (at least I think it was CR).

    D&D General What's your view on a pirate-driven campaign?

For ship actions I think it's more fun for the players to do group rolls. Either additive against higher than normal DCs, average or median roll, or count successes. One way I saw it handled in another system was the player(s) can use their character abilities to aid a group roll only for their...

    D&D General Games Economies

I like how Dragon Age: Origins did it and implement that approach in many of my games. First, 100cp = 1sp and 100sp = 1gp. I've changed all my 5e prices to match this and it feels a lot better. Mechanically it's no different, but handing a Smith 15gp to make me plate armor instead of 1500gp...

    Playing AS monsters?

5e, players were all polymorphed into monsters as part of a some genie shenanigans. Werebear, vampire spawn, otyugh, and flesh golem (all CR 5). They maintained their personalities, but otherwise had the stats of the monsters. The goal was to undo the polymorph while navigating a town where all...

D&D General Homebrew or Premade Campaigns?

Homebrew 95% of the time. It's mainly that we have so many people who want to make and run their own stuff and getting burned by some bad pre-made stuff (HotDQ and Strixhaven being the big culprits there).

Worlds of Design: Life in the Big City

When I design cities for my campaigns I like to include a design "flaw", a major historical event, a quirk, and the current talk of the town. Four to six bullet points that give it flavor. Otherwise I assume things like water, food, government, etc. are roughly standard fair. In a campaign where...

    D&D General D&D memes thread discussion…

I think the joke is that Fournival has been telling the dragon, and maybe others as well, that they are the one true love and soulmate of Arisen. Not sure if Arisen is a name or a title. Anyway, Arisen says that's not true and the dragon starts floundering because this ruins their whole "fight...

    Worlds of Design: Only Human

Your Turn: What’s the non-human dominant species in your fantasy world? My most recent setting spans multiple worlds. With the exception of two, every group originated on their own world. They are adapted to unique aspects of these worlds, but not geographical aspects for the most part...

There's A New Edition Of The Cypher System Coming

I never had an issue with this, but I'm not mad if they made it easier. I'm most interested in this bit. I've come full circle starting with not a fan, but I get it -> played more and the mechanics make more sense -> "Everything is connected! We are all one!" -> starts to feel limiting -> not a...

    D&D General Do THIS, WotC!

I've been running a modern setting campaign and it's been really fun. I've had to remake and homebrew some stuff to make it work. Borrowed bits from UA and used some spells from Mage Hand Press' Arcane Archive. That's fine. But I would love a more cohesive redesign of classes, spells, and...

Which RPG has the best combat rules for flying vehicles?

Coriolis by Free League is an example of option 2. Ranged Combat is used for guns and ship weapons, Technology can repair cars and ship modules, Command aids allies that follow your orders on foot and in space, Data Djinn (aka hacking) can bypass terminals and overwhelm enemy systems attacking...

D&D 5E (2014) Have you seen "Squished Leveling" in DND?

They even used the word squish. Not sure how I missed it. Thanks for finding this.

D&D 5E (2014) Have you seen "Squished Leveling" in DND?

I think @Horwath said it pretty well. There are cool features that never really see the light of day in my games. By having them show up earlier I get to see them and have a chance to use them before the campaign ends. That was the main issue that other variants I found didn't address well. Less...

D&D 5E (2014) Have you seen "Squished Leveling" in DND?

Subclass features come online at different levels across classes and their power/purpose isn't consistent. For the original three Paladin subclasses their level 15 subclass features are a fairly simple reactive and/or passive benefit. Combining that with offensively minded Improved Divine Smite...
