I don't think it's a new edition in the same way 3.5 and 4.5 (Essentials) weren't new editions. Don't worry, I think we'll definitely know it when a new edition (6th edition) comes out.

I miss the 3E-era Age of Mortals novels. They were well coordinated and took the setting forward.
How baked in is the setting? Could you pick up the game just for the mechanics and run it with a more generic fantasy world like Greyhawk or Forgotten Realms?
