D&D Player’s Handbook (2024)

D&D (2024) D&D Player’s Handbook (2024)

Not really. My FLGS discounts their products, including D&D books. Granted, not by very much. But it's enough to get me to shop there over Amazon, even though Amazon is still cheaper. Often by 10% or so.

They rarely discount the limited covers for D&D books, but do discount the "regular" covers. And if they have something that is rare for some reason, they'll jack the price, sometimes unethically . . . although it's been years since I noticed them doing that. Back in 2014 they actually charged more than MSRP for some of the first limited covers on D&D books, which is why I don't own the mindflayer cover for Volo's Guide.
FYI, Fritz is a FLGS retailer.

Maybe they'll just change Magic Initiate to function like the Strixhaven Initiate feat. That feat had you choose which house you were aligned with, and then gave you a choice of 2 cantrips from a list of 3 and a choice of a first level spell from two different classes to choose from based on the school. They could do something similar like if you choose "Magic Initiate: Primal" you can choose two cantrips with possible options being Druidcraft, Shillelagh, and Produce Flame and allow you to choose a 1st level Druid or Ranger spell to learn.
That makes a lot of sense!

Also, even with book prices increasing, RPGs are still one of the most economical hobbies out there in terms of cost-to-entertainment-hours ratio.

A. Not that cheap if you don't have the money to begin with. I suspect one of my players doesn't.

B. Even cheaper using existing library.

C. Not everyone has access to cheap Amazon books. We might be looking at $200 usd retail give or take.

A. Getting into any hobby will have an up-front investment cost. Yes, that sucks, but it’s still true that RPGs are on the more affordable side.

B. Obviously, and that’s part of what keeps RPGs such an economical hobby.

C. Which looks like a lot, but again, compare that to the initial investment in basically any other hobby and it starts to look more reasonable, especially for how many entertainment hours you get out of that investment.

Like, I’m not saying it isn’t expensive. I’m saying all entertainment is expensive, and as entertainment expenses go, RPGs get you a lot of bang for your buck.

USA is roughly where we were 5 years ago cost of living crisis.

I know people who basically can't afford any hobbies.

If D&D is going to transform into "Spells & Spell-like abilities" I hope at least 50% of the spells are rewritten in the PHB

Probably won't buy it. I'll wait till they update SRD, so i can judge how much of mechanical overhaul they did. No point in buying new book that has like 70%+ of crunch that's already in the book i own. Not interested in art, layout or collecting part, only in updated mechanics. And I highly doubt that will be worth 60e.

I am confused as to what you mean. Spell-like abilities have been there since the beginning. It’s just been added to some wizard NPC’s that really ruffled some feathers.
