I am just at a loss. I don't understand how we can all be playing the same game, all have largish circles we travel in and have such VASTLY different experience.
Well....some circles are bigger then others. And some circles never get close to each other.

And, we don't all play the same game, even when we are all playing the "offical published" game D&D.

but we aren't talking house rules or little differences there are people on here that will tell you ME, my way of DMing that has been evolving for 30ish years will lead to no one role playing... and they know 100% it is worse then other ways we have tried. When confronted with the fact that we tried there way and our way was better I have been out right called a lier. And like I said just up thread I can't imagine that the answers here lead to teh problems here for some, it is completely backwardly experience.

We are talking about a real fundamental way(s) the game is played.

A LOT of gamers, and people, a jerks....at best. There are gamers that only pretend to "play" the game....the "real game " to them is to ruin fun for everyone. And worse.

And I know our approaches are worlds...galaxies...whole realities apart.

I have not tried your way in 5E. I've experienced similar enough in 4E and previous editions for that matter to know what you're talking about.
I’m not convinced you have, given the comparisons you’ve made of it, e.g. to skill challenges. Though I don’t doubt you’ve played in ways to think are like what I’m describing.
EDIT: But I also think it's a bit presumptuous to say that we don't know ourselves well enough to know what we would like. My imagination is not so limited that I cannot possibly imagine what it would be like.
I’m not presuming. I didn’t think I’d like it either before I tried it. You think you couldn’t possibly be mistaken in the same way?

So ... I'm just willfully ignorant and can't possibly imagine the greatness of your works. It's great that it works for you. That's great. It wouldn't work for me because I've tried things that are similar and I know how I reacted. Even if I hadn't it's insulting to say that I could not possibly imagine it.

P.S. I'm done.

It’s hilarious that you think you couldn’t possibly be mistaken in some way.

That was random.
It's one thing to like a style of play. The game is quite flexible that way. But to continuously insist that your preferred style is better, that you can't possibly know what you'll think unless you try it as well gets old.

I've tried to explain what I do, how it works, what I get out of it as a player and DM. We're told again and again that we can't possibly know what it's like and that if we did try it we'd like it. It's weird and has gotten annoying.

I've played a long time. I've tried many different styles. I know what I like and what I don't. It's one thing to disagree. It's another to insist that there's a better way and you can't comprehend unless you drink the kool-aid.

Even if Charlaquin is right (they're not) at a certain point try a different explanation, a different approach to show what you mean or just let it be. Telling people you tried it and liked it so the only way for anyone to know for sure is to try it is obviously not convincing. Especially when, given the descriptions provided, people have tried it, or close enough.

That's the issue.
