Friday, May 16th, 2008 D&D 4th Edition NewsThis excerpt found here about magic items. It talks about the philosophy behind them, the cost of items, identifying items and magic item categories.
It also gives three full examples of magic items: Flaming Weapon, Phasing Weapon and Holy Weapon.
You can read the first full review of Keep on the Shadowfell here. It's fairly lengthy and detailed; the reviewer concludes that: "This is a well made adventure that showcases what low-level heroic-tiered characters and foes can do. It’s a simple, straightforward story that puts into play some of the core 4e fluff (The Shadowfell, Orcus, points of lights and so on)." Thursday, May 15th, 2008 d20 System & OGLNew Sales- Cartography Unlimited for RPGs has slashed prices by 50% on their products until the end of August to help gamers on a limited budget.
Wednesday, May 14th, 2008 EN Publishing NewsWar of the Burning Sky #11: Under the Eye of the Tempest, by Wil Upchurch, is now available in paperback form. There are two versions available: one with a black-and-white interior ($12.99) and one with a full-color interior ($18.99). D&D 4th Edition NewsToday's excerpt comes from the Dungeon Master's Guide, and deals with Economy & Reward.
The article explains the difference bettween 3E and 4E treasure, shows us the XP Rewards table (plus the Quest XP Rewards table), and introduces "treasure parcels", with examples at the Heroic, Paragon and Epic tiers of play.
Finally, it looks briefly at the magic item economy, and how that interacts with the rituals Enchant Magic Item and Disenchant Magic Item. Notably, it points out that the system still works even if players are never allowed to buy or sell magic items. d20 System & OGLNew Releases- Blackdirge Publishing has released Blackdyrge's Templates: Deep Spawn, an aquatic template based on deep-sea creatures such as gulper eels and anglerfish.
- Dreamscarred Press has released The Mind Unveiled: Feats, a collection of more than 60 new feats for games using psionics.
- The Other Game Company and Arion Games have announced a new collaboration with a set of paper miniatures specifically for Dungeon Bash, the Roleplaying/Board game of dungeon exploration. The new paper miniature set by Arion Games provides 56 heroes, NPC’s, monsters and other enemies. The products are available here and here.
Contests- Otherworld Miniatures and Fight On! have announced a summer adventure contest. Full details are available here.
Tuesday, May 13th, 2008 Community News- Gnome Stew, the game mastering blog, is a new site written by GMs, for GMs. With 10 authors, Gnome Stew delivers system-neutral and system-specific content for game masters.
Monday, May 12th, 2008 Site NewsApologies for the downtime over the last 24 hours or so - EN World was the target of hackers (again!), and the server went down for a while. It's back up now, and we're monitoring to see if it happens again. EN Publishing News Ascension, the third and final novel in Aeryn "Blackdirge" Rudel's Metamorphosis: From Dretch to Demon Lord trilogy is finally here! The final novel in the METAMORPHOSIS trilogy!
Now in command of a massive daemonic army, Yaghur Hod invades the Abyss and seeks to reclaim the portion of his power still trapped within the sentient sword, Fiendbleeder. But the mighty daemon's allies include more than the teeming multitudes of Hades and Gehenna - he has awakened an ancient and terrible evil from an eons-long sleep, promising the souls of all who stand against him to the eldritch horror.
As Yaghur Hod battles his way through the realms of Abyssal lords foolish enough to oppose him, Hazergal and a motley alliance of archfiends race to gather an army of their own. In the face of this dire threat, the former archmage must hold together a tumultuous alliance of fiends, while struggling to retain his humanity in an ever-changing demonic body.
And, as Yahgur Hod and his army close in, Hazergal is forced to make a blasphemous choice: ascend to the pinnacle of demonic power and sacrifice what is left of his humanity or face utter destruction.
For more information on the trilogy, including the first two books, Death of a Demon Lord and The Tides of Chaos, click here. D&D 4th Edition NewsAn enterprising member of the Giant in the Playground messageboards has posted scans of the character sheets from Keep on the Shadowfell here: Dwarf fighter, Human wizard, Half-Elf cleric of Bahamut, Dragonborn paladin, and Halfing rogue.
There are two major updates today on the official site. - Giants takes a look at the reimagining of giants and provides the stat blocks for the Hill Giant (Level 13 Brute) and the Earth Titan (Level 16 Elite Brute).
- Epic Destinies, like the earlier Paragon Paths excerpt, presents the concept of an Epic Destiny and gives the example of the Archmage.
Wednesday's excerpt will take a look at that old source of so many debates, the D&D Economy. d20 System & OGLIf you're a fan of Paizo's Pathfinder RPG, you'll like this bit of news:
Monte Cook Joins the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game™ Team
Co-creator of 3rd Edition Dungeons & Dragons® to act as Rules Consultant
May 12, 2008 (BELLEVUE, Wash.) – Paizo Publishing®, LLC today announced that Monte Cook, the co-creator of 3rd Edition Dungeons & Dragons and author of the 3.5 PHB and DMG as well as the Ptolus™ campaign setting and the recent Book of Experimental Might™, has joined the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game team as a Rules Consultant.
"This is going to be a lot of fun," said Monte Cook. "Pathfinder is a fresh spin on a rules system that I love and the guys at Paizo are great to work with. They produce nothing but the highest quality products."
"Monte Cook is a legend of third edition and of the Open Gaming movement," said Paizo’s Publisher, Erik Mona. "He’s also a great DM, and has the best mind for mechanics I’ve ever seen. To have one of the original third edition designers helping us with the Pathfinder RPG is like a dream come true. With Monte’s involvement, I am certain that the future of the edition he helped to create will be very long and very fruitful."
"I am really excited to be working with Monte on this project," said Paizo’s Lead Designer, Jason Bulmahn. "His advice has been a great help to the Pathfinder RPG. When it comes to rules design and knowledge of the 3.5 system, there is absolutely no one better."
Monte Cook will also be contributing an introduction to the final Pathfinder Roleplaying Game hardcover, scheduled for an August 2009 release.
The Pathfinder Roleplaying Game is a tabletop fantasy roleplaying game that will serve as the anchor for Paizo Publishing’s popular line of Pathfinder adventures, sourcebooks, and campaigns. Last March marked the beginning of a year-long Open Playtest of the new rules, which are based on the popular 3.5 rules available under the Open Game License. The Pathfinder RPG is designed with backward compatibility as one of its primary goals, so players will continue to enjoy their lifelong fantasy gaming hobby without invalidating their entire game library. - The fluff text for H2: Thunderspire Labyrinth: "Beneath the stormy peak of Thunderspire Mountain lies the labyrinth, an ancient, ruined minotaur city. For over two decades, an order of wizards called the Mages of Saruun has governed the labyrinth's upper levels, creating a safe haven called the Seven-Pillared Hall where surface-dwellers and underground denizens can meet to trade. Humans, halflings, dwarves, duergar, goblins, orcs, troglodytes, and others come to the hall to barter under the watchful eyes of the Mages of Saruun and their towering minotaur constructs.... The mages have one rule in the Seven-Pillared Hall: Maintain the peace. Visitors who leave the safety of the hall and venture into the labyrinth go at their own risk, for in the darkness of the labyrinth dwell foul creatures, eager for the chance to capture or kill foolhardy explorers.
