    D&D 5E Running Tier 3 D&D 5e

That is just how I read it. I'm not saying I don't believe you as it could be interpreted either way. But if you think that is the total it really nerfs Divine Smite against undead and Fiends if you interpret the next sentance the same way. Also note I did have an error in my earlier math, I...

    D&D 5E Running Tier 3 D&D 5e

That goes in the action economy discussion made earlier. It is a valid point, in terms of action economy and single target damage it is difficult to beat Divine Smite for one turn in the day. That does not mean the class is broken though and I think the group overall will generally fair worse...

No. Casting Haste takes one action. Action: cast Haste (0 attacks) Action Surge: Attack action - extra attack (2 attacks), Unleash Incarnation (1 attack) Haste: Attack action (1 attack) That is 4 attacks total. It would be 5 (not 7) but the Haste spell has a disclaimer in it that when you...

So does the example I replied to. Someone brought up a Paladin 9/Echo Knight 3 and I went over several other multiclasses that can do comparable or more in melee. It is not a comparison to a single class. It is a comparison to a multiclass Paladin 9/Echo Knight 3 that allegedly would do...

D&D (2024) Maybe this is a bit late, but let's talk about Rogue's Niche, and What Rogue Should Be.

I am not really a fan of classes having a niche, but if you want to call out one for the Rogue as a class it is flexibility. Wth average rolls, the Rogue can really excel at the one of the two non-combat pillars while still being ok at the other non-combat pillar and at ok at combat and they...

    D&D 5E Running Tier 3 D&D 5e

You seem to be repeatedly quoting me though? If you don't want to have a discussion why are you doing that? The math is not subjective though and the math does not support the idea that the damamge you get from using a divine smite is worth the spell slot. I used Steel Wind Strike earlier...

17th level is also when a 5th level Paladin gets 5th level smites. Divine Smite is useful I am not challanging that. It is a not a trap like say for example Flurry of Blows on a Monk, but it is not OP either and on a slot-for-slot basis is generally not as powerful as casting a spell.

    D&D 5E Running Tier 3 D&D 5e

You will not be able to force an AOO on your turn with a P9/Echo 3 Using Haste and on the first turn you are making 4 attacks (Haste attack, Action Surge Extra Attack, Unleash Incarnation). You continue 4 per turn as long as you hang on to concentration. Those 4 attacks if they all hit...

    D&D 5E Running Tier 3 D&D 5e

You are not the only one reading this thread. Smite is just not that powerful. It just isn't :) Spells are just a more powerful use of slots. You said you don't know anyone who considered the spell weak. So yes, what someone else is on record saying is very relevant to your statement...

    D&D 5E Running Tier 3 D&D 5e

Yeah those things not doable by a Paladin. I mean it could happen with a multiclass, but then the Wish spell could or the spell I noted earlier (Steel Wind Strike) could happen with a multiclass too. A Paladin using Smite is just not going to be game breaking, not even if you managed to cobble...

WotC WotC can, and probably should support multiple editions of D&D.

What is missing? Take out anything that is not 5E or that is not yet printed, then take out the cookbook and the DM screen, then take out the modules. You will be left with pretty close to 80% of what is left I think.

Then you do not have the evidence to back up your claim. We do not know that for a fact, it is supported by analysis, but that is not the same as fact and to be clear that analysis suggests that the number is anywhere between 25% and 40% which is not the same as multiplying by 4. It would be...

To be clear what I am responding to your question: In other words, even if he's right and AD&D sold so many copies - how many of those people are still in the hobby but not into 5e? My answer: Very few [are still in the hobby but not into 5E]. You want me to provide evidence for something I...

I am not the one who provided that number, and if you copied a bit more of my post you would see I said "I don't think it is that many"

Very few. If you go back to my original post I did not say it was a good idea to do this, only that if they did do it, it would make more sense for 1E than for 3E (as originally suggested) as OSR is focused on 1E. In pure numbers I purchased more 1E content than I have 5E content, but I...

I agree you would need to find exact numbers and you would need those numbers before you could support any claim that 5E outsold 1E. I think most modules sold more 20k. Then numbers I have seen written (unverified) were between 50k and 150k on average during the 1980s. Higher before the 1980s...

Why don't you give me the numbers. The numbers we know for a fact put TSR 1E way ahead. You claim that the bookscan only account for 30-40% of 5E sales, I am claiming that the TSR numbers account for less than 50% of their sales. Until you can find numbers for the 1E products you have no...

    D&D 5E Running Tier 3 D&D 5e

Smite does offer an advantage in action economy and Divine Smite is useful. It is not powerful or game breaking though in the same way that some spells are, including some Paladin spells. Paladins do get good spells for combat, although they are split between 1st and 5th level mostly...

    D&D 5E Running Tier 3 D&D 5e

I don't know how you can divine smite 6 times in one turn, but I will take your word for it. Divine Smite can do a lot of damage and can do that very quickly and against some foes that is the best play, particularly if the have legendary resistances. However dumping an entire days damage into...

    D&D 5E Running Tier 3 D&D 5e

It was an example of a 5th level spell and Treantmonk branded it Purple which is "modest". If you are talking about Paladin spells, the following spells are all generally more powerful (some are way more powerful) than using a smite with the same slot: Banishing Smite Destructive Wave Holy...
