WotC WotC can, and probably should support multiple editions of D&D.

No reason to include the magazine...that was fan submission material, and the neatest cognate currently is Beyond and DMsGuild which are tricky comparisons at best. Even the millions of folks who might not buy anythong on Beyond (like myself) still will get freebies or read their articles at a...

WotC WotC can, and probably should support multiple editions of D&D.

Nope, thst us what BookScan normally represents for boosk, but missing out on the FLGS makes a huge difference here.

Also check this out from the same source on the bookscan numbers: "So, from both the PH reported sales and the Starter Sets on Forbes, we might estimate BookScan is between 23-34% of actual sales. This is, of course, a fallible estimate in the absence of more data."...

WotC WotC can, and probably should support multiple editions of D&D.

Nope, that's what bookscan normally represents, but in the case of D&D they represent a far, far smaller chunk. @Alphastream did the math on it in his blog, and it seems these are closer to a third or fourth of the actual 5E total book dales (recall, book scan misses out on all FLGS), and Ray...

WotC WotC can, and probably should support multiple editions of D&D.

Yet again, it must be noted that the bookscan data seems to represent about 25-30% of 5E print sales, so the numbers you cite precisely indicate that 5E has outsold both 1E and BD&D.

WotC WotC can, and probably should support multiple editions of D&D.

Again, the bookscan numbers represent a fraction of 5E book sales

Based on what Riggs wrote, the game products were part of the same cycle of debt, hence why TSR pushed so much product.

WotC WotC can, and probably should support multiple editions of D&D.

The magazine material was more like DMsGuild fan releases, not TSR designer work.

WotC WotC can, and probably should support multiple editions of D&D.

It is worth noting that Teos Abadia estimated, and Ray Winninger confirmed, that those numbers reflect a fraction of 5E sales.

WotC WotC can, and probably should support multiple editions of D&D.

I don't think thr magazines really count, either, since the submission by fans model makes that content more like the DMsGuild than WotC book output...and comparing magazines to the DMsGuild is a bit complicated to say the least.

How Do We Measure A Game's Success?

Being played, for a game, and enjoyed over a length of time. Chess is a very successful game, that people continue to buy sets and invest a lot of play time across centuries. Call of Cthulu is still one of the best selling and widely played RPGs even after 40 years, so it is a huge success.

The most popular shows among adults are TV-14 crime procedurally on CBS.

WotC WotC can, and probably should support multiple editions of D&D.

Do also keep on mind that the numbers we have exclude sales from all game stores, sales from outside the U.S., and actually a lot of Amazon sales. Do, those numbers that already show the PHB sales as being higher are the tip of the iceberg. Sales for older individual modules were, by all...

WotC WotC can, and probably should support multiple editions of D&D.

Based on the numbers Ben Riggs shared a while back, just about everything other than the core books sold way less all the time. 100,000 magazines is one thing, but that pales in comparison to D&D Beyond user numbers that are over 10 million. 5E is way way bugger than 1E or Basic were, combined.

WotC WotC can, and probably should support multiple editions of D&D.

I don't expect WotC to produce material for older Editions, but they sure seem to be putting a lot of energy into making the VTT rules neutral, which combined with selling older material in PDFs would be a pretty good way to facilitate older editions. More CC would be nice, too.

D&D 5E New Monster Manual Cover

Fair point, yet I have seen several posters here state they were buying these now based on tge covers. Art reactions are powerful.

    Are our tastes set?

Different version: I started with 3.x, but I couldn't conceive of going back after playing 5E. Maybe trying some BD&D or AD&D, but 3.x? Nah.

D&D 5E New Monster Manual Cover

The Classes have been lightly revised in ways that were very well received in pyblic testing, Race is now Species, grappling has been tweaked, the Monsters are all getting revised stat blocks. But the game is staying pretty much the same More importantly, the Monster Manual is going from 300...

D&D 5E New Monster Manual Cover

"What edition are we playing?" "'24" Easy. OneD&D was never the name of the revision, that was an umbrella term for Beyond, the VTT and pen and paper play that they abandoned a long time ago now.

D&D 5E New Monster Manual Cover

I mean, the art on these covers is obviously great, but there isn't much to argue about. De gustibus non disputantem. If someone doesn't like cool fantasy art, then they don't like cool fantasy art. Whereas with the book content, there is more meat to kvetch about.
