D&D 5E Help me understand & find the fun in OC/neo-trad play...

If turning into a duck for a long period of time, in-game, is a part of your setting's definition of magic, then shouldn't the players be willing to explore that? Exploring the possible outcomes of magic is part and parcel of crafting a realistic setting. If simulation is the primary priority...

D&D General What is the right amount of Classes for Dungeons and Dragons?

To be clear, "better balanced" does not mean "actually balanced". :) But you'd eliminate most of the Tier 1 classes (wizard, cleric, druid) and a lot of the lowest Tier classes (like fighter and monk) in one fell swoop. You still have powerhouses like psion and archivist, but at least you have...

D&D General What is the right amount of Classes for Dungeons and Dragons?

I'll go further and say that "no PHB allowed" 3.5 would be better balanced than "PHB only" 3.5.

D&D 5E Help me understand & find the fun in OC/neo-trad play...

There's nothing wrong with a game not working for you. It sounds like you tried in good faith, and it didn't work out. Not seeing an issue.

D&D General New Interview with Rob Heinsoo About 4E

Since D&D is fundamentally a cooperative game, I don't think people are really looking for perfect balance. The only concern on the balance front is the appearance of tradeoffs (well, he doesn't get spells, but he does have more hit points!) and for no option to completely eclipse another...

D&D General What is the right amount of Classes for Dungeons and Dragons?

I don't understand the question and I won't respond to it.

    D&D 1E Favorite Obscure Rules from TSR-era D&D

That's the main reason I always advocate decoupling attack accuracy from stats for modern D&D. It removes the mechanical pressure to always raise stats at the expense of more interesting, versatile feats.

D&D General What is the right amount of Classes for Dungeons and Dragons?

Sorry. Not only no, but hell no.

D&D General What is the right amount of Classes for Dungeons and Dragons?

Having different mechanics for the sake of novelty and variety is reason enough, to my mind. Surely a few of the thousand pages of required documentation for a RPG can be spared for a secondary magic system.

D&D General Why Gnomes Are Awesome (+)

Pretty sure that gnome genetics already did that. :)

D&D General What is the right amount of Classes for Dungeons and Dragons?

That's me, I lean into controversy! My advocacy (for D&D, specifically) is for a concept that's not really discussed (or I've not stumbled across it); robust character creation options prior to game start, followed by somewhat randomized, "roguelike" progression triggered by in-narrative...

Please, in the name of whatever deity or cosmic force you all hold relevant, can we not reboot that thread again? :)

D&D General New Interview with Rob Heinsoo About 4E

I think it's because for a non-negligible portion of the player base, thespianism and invocations of colo(u)r are among the principal purposes of play. It's similar to some posts in other concurrent threads about how the only difference between two characters that actually matters is how...

    D&D (2024) What Should D&D 2024 Have Been +

Yes, obviously. Without multiclassing, what are we even doing here?

    D&D (2024) What Should D&D 2024 Have Been +

I would definitely be wary of a game advertising "no multiclass" as a feature. It's a pretty strong sign that the DM and I aren't going to agree about what's important in a game.

D&D General How often do you complete a campaign as a player?

I average about 4 in-person game nights a month and 3 online game nights a month; considering I'm married with 4 kids, any more than that is an extreme challenge.

D&D General How often do you complete a campaign as a player?

I do wonder if weekly play is “the norm”. Only one of my 4 groups is weekly. One of my groups was weekly for a few years but switched to every other week because weekly was too much, which seems to me be much more common as people get into their 40s or higher.
