I also just liked a lot of those more experimental books. Magic of Incarnum, Tome of Magic, Tome of Battle weren't perfect, but I appreciated the innovation.

Hmmm, I'm awaiting the conundrum I'll have if I vastly prefer the alt cover, because I prefer the standard PHB over the alt ... do I go for consistency or just get the different style covers?

To be honest, I'd sooner use a renown system or something else. Maybe feats. Or to go to 4e ... something I think 5e is missing might be adding Themes as an optional add-on to PCs. Themes can be a bit more universal

Honestly, the poor organization alone is enough to sink it. Yes, it is well written with good advice, but unless you read it cover to cover and filled it with sticky-notes, good luck finding it again.

I even remember hearing the complaint that 4e was "incomplete" until PH2 brought the Barbarian, Bard, Druid and Sorcerer back. Of course, 4e compounded that with the Role/Power source grid, there were calls for a Martial Controller right up to the end until Essentials tried it.

Honestly, I've never seen the cartoons, so whether or not these are cartoon characters doesn't really matter much to me. I just ... quibble with the art a little, like the magical arc from Venger looks odd to me.

I quite liked 4e. While I had enjoyed 3.5 ... as a player, the first time behind the DM screen was a disaster and only when 4e rolled around did I give it another try. And, tbh, it did a lot of things really great. Minions, monster roles, and easy to just eyeball encounter math made it a breeze...
