You don't even have to give every monster a role either. We can compromise and say that having combat role labels would be useful for just some of them.

Only allowing primary skills on 4E skill challenges and wondering why there's no player creativity is like only having one fight in a 5E adventuring day and wondering why combat is too easy.

When it comes to 4E, the perception among many is that it's a game that tightly controls playstyle. It's the most common complaint about 4E to many. I, however, am so empowered, that even the 4E books that have straightjacketed dozens of DMs on this very forum is no match for my creativity...

Can you bring up the quote then? I've been in the trenches the past few days, so may have lost track of my ongoing arguments.

A friend of mine helped me figure out why I feel like odd man out on these forums. I'm content with not getting my way all the time.

I never hear any gorgnard talk about how their woodworking saved their party from a TPK. Or a DM on how many ranks of perform comedy the town jokester should have. Or hear a power gamer brag about how they got a +50 on their craft (cheese) skill and broke a game with it.

So keep combat roles out of the PHB and put them in the DMG instead? The DM does resemble a director in some ways.
