D&D 5E Ruling Question: Swarms and Repelling Blast

They have 1 (average), but an individual rat could have as many as 3 hp. Of course. Last night was a "ruling in the moment", but everyone understood I would consider it further and we would discuss it as a group later. It was one of those things done for expediancy during game time. Also, as I...

D&D 5E Ruling Question: Swarms and Repelling Blast

But there are SA rulings that a swarm is not "a" creature, but several. It is why you cannot polymoprh a swarm of tiny beasts, it is not "a" beast. I can visualize it just fine, but in the same respects a swarm cannot be grappled (and moved), shoved and knocked prone, or restrained. If you can...

D&D 5E Ruling Question: Swarms and Repelling Blast

Well, not many votes, but I'm in the minority so far LOL!. As DM, I ruled no at the time and here is why: Repelling blast affects a (singular) creature. A swarm is not a singular beast. Other SA rulings, involving things like Wild Shape of example, state a swarm is several creatures--hence why...

    D&D 5E Running Tier 3 D&D 5e

Then don't quote me in your post? If you quote me, it seems like you are, in fact, addressing me unless you make it clear you aren't. Otherwise, I will continue to read it that you are. Which, in fact, is the reason why 90+% of people quote a post: to reply directly to them, to expound on the...

D&D 5E Ruling Question: Swarms and Repelling Blast

In our game tonight a Warlock PC hit a swarm of rats with his eldritch blast. The Warlock has the Repelling Blast eldritch innocation. What would be your ruling: does the repelling blast affect the swarm of rats, pushing the swarm up to 10 feet back in a straight line?

As I said before: ;) EDIT: LOL like what someone else "branded it" makes any difference???

D&D 5E Escaping from (rope) bonds... What is your ruling?

First, you don't know that. And by equal, they have to be equal enough to qualify for the same modifiers for each element, that's all. Someone who as "has a +1" to Agility, Reflexes, and Balance would have a Dexterity modifier +1. I can easily imagine a person who is "good" at all three...

D&D 5E Advanced D&D or "what to minimally fix in 5E?"

    Pointless.

    D&D 5E Running Tier 3 D&D 5e

Paladin's don't have steel wind strike, for one thing. Smite is more powerful as written than pretty much any paladin spell. I don't know anyone who considers SWS a "weak spell" except, now, for you. I'm not going to get into a long-winded debate about this, but of course you can disagree all...

D&D 5E Escaping from (rope) bonds... What is your ruling?

They have been watered down in many ways, but IME they actually can cover every thing, if properly and broadly defined, comprised of multiple elements. Dexterity, for example, throughout the editions includes these elements: In 1E: hand-eye coordination, agility, reflexes, precision, balance...

    D&D 5E Running Tier 3 D&D 5e

Paladin smites are one of the game breaking features IME. Paladins should have to "declare" smite empowerment prior to making an attack, perhaps as a bonus action, which lasts until the start of their next turn. This way, if the paladin misses, their attack is still empowered for Extra Attack...

D&D 5E Advanced D&D or "what to minimally fix in 5E?"

Right, but wasn't D&D d20 first? Then other game systems developed off from its rule set/ design? I feel like D&D built 5E in the current ruleset, and other 5E games came online after.

    D&D 5E Running Tier 3 D&D 5e

How is PC1 doing an average of 70 points of dmg per round, even with Smites? It really should be around 40-45. I can see it once in a while, especially with a crit maybe, but those are outliers, not "average". Anyway, tier 3 encounters rely on environment, numbers, and mixture of foes to keep...

D&D 5E Advanced D&D or "what to minimally fix in 5E?"

Which came first: 5E D&D, or other 5E games??? What, precisely, is the 5E ruleset devoid of D&D? Isn't "5E' just the current term used to replace the "d20" tag that began with 3rd Ed D&D?

D&D 5E Advanced D&D or "what to minimally fix in 5E?"

Point 1: increased character build depth and complexity. As a DM I agree--I don't want even more stuff I have to remember, especially when my players don't. I deal with a lot of new players, or players with problems recalling everything about their characters, so giving them more would not only...
