D&D General What is the Quintissential D&D Mascot Monster?

No way how can you possibly call this silly looking? Blasphemy

D&D General What is the Quintissential D&D Mascot Monster?

I was going to answer Mimics, but Red Dragon and Beholder are great answers too.

D&D General How Do You Handle Falling Damage?

I use standard 1d6 damage per 10 feet, but no cap on damage taken. RAW is incredibly silly to pretend like you reach terminal velocity after only 200 feet, I'm all for suspending real life physics but that's just so far off

D&D 5E Help me understand & find the fun in OC/neo-trad play...

Yeah wasn't the point of the thread for people to explain what they enjoy about neo-trad? Somehow many the posts are just about how much neo-trad sucks

D&D 5E Help me understand & find the fun in OC/neo-trad play...

I have seen all of these things happen many times in neo-trad games, with the exception of mind control lasting "an entire game session" (mind control yes, but that duration is excessive). The difference would be that all of these events would occur as part of a tractable challenge with an...

D&D 5E Help me understand & find the fun in OC/neo-trad play...

You show only the difference between what you imagine neo-trad to mean and what it actually is in reality. If I ever saw a table playing the way you describe neo-trad I would run away in a hurry. Luckily I've never seen anything remotely resembling what you describe

D&D 5E Help me understand & find the fun in OC/neo-trad play...

Yeah he's posted like 10 times with strawman arguments where he defines "neo-triad" (sic) as something completely different from reality and then proceeds to bash on how bad it is. Every playstyle will sound awful when misrepresented by someone who hates it and is biased against it.

    D&D (2024) Understanding "nostalgia"

I'd love to see a study like this for Heavy Metal listeners only - metal just keeps getting better every year. When I go back and listen to the stuff I loved as a teen, it's so slow and boring by comparison

D&D 5E Help me understand & find the fun in OC/neo-trad play...

You're mostly correct here, but there is an actual difference in how game styles have evolved over the years. Just because no one agrees on the definition doesn't mean there isn't actually something here worth discussing. Makes it super difficult to get any productive discussion going though...

D&D 5E Help me understand & find the fun in OC/neo-trad play...

Yeah for sure I've only played at a handful of tables, but what has me the most confused is people using Critical Role as an example of the DM somehow having no control over the story

D&D 5E Help me understand & find the fun in OC/neo-trad play...

Well yeah, because it is one sided. The DM runs the show and has final say on everything, so the DM can incorporate player ideas whenever the DM chooses to, but it doesn't work the other way around. Players don't get to just make decisions about what happens in the DMs' world, they can only...

D&D 5E Help me understand & find the fun in OC/neo-trad play...

Answering for myself, I've never heard these labels before but I love the 'Critical Role style' which is apparently OC/neo-trad. To me the draw is that when done properly, there is almost no difference between what that article describes as Traditional vs OC/neo-trad. Both focus on telling...

D&D 5E D&D is a drag race, think of climbing as a cantrip, and the rogue would be better at lock picking if it could only pick a few locks per day.

No not really. Spider Climb definitely does let you do more than Athletics for a 2nd level spellslot AND concentration. I just think that usually there isn't that much extra capability gained to justify the resources. Certainly not enough to justify the whole "casters can do everything and...

D&D 5E D&D is a drag race, think of climbing as a cantrip, and the rogue would be better at lock picking if it could only pick a few locks per day.

Maybe not in your games ;) Edit: ok definitely not the hands free part, I just don't think that matters much but I suppose sometimes it could

D&D 5E D&D is a drag race, think of climbing as a cantrip, and the rogue would be better at lock picking if it could only pick a few locks per day.

Martials can easily do all this stuff, they just need to be creative and have a DM who allows Martial characters to do cool stuff too. Tie a rope to a javelin, make an attack roll, then scurry across. Athletics can easily match misty step (at least outside combat where opportunity attacks...

D&D 5E Rogue multiple sneak attack in a round.

My answer was going to be what you wrote up for Rogue/BattleMaster, since no feats are required to pull off the 2x Sneak Attack. You have so many options to get the 2x sneak attack, a) Quick Toss + Readied Action (automatic but does lose Extra Attack on your readied action), b) between...

D&D 5E Long time players and 5e’s success

Yeah really. Anyone who thinks WotC is going to somehow not care about the group of people with the most discretionary money to spend, really isn't giving corporate greed enough credit

D&D 5E Homebrew: How to modify Shield spell?

Indeed it does, but it's still not really enough to bother with those feats I would think
