D&D General How Do You Handle Falling Damage?

When it comes to falling, damage, and commoners, a lot of this just comes down to oversimplification of damage modeling. One we can either ignore or modify. A commoner has 4 HP because they are not trained in combat, they aren't supposed to be any good at it and are killed easily. A 20th...

D&D Movie/TV Paramount+ Will Not Proceed with Dungeons & Dragons Live-Action TV Show

Yeah, the D&D movie needed to do an Iron Man before trying to do a blockbuster. Part of why I think they should have started with low level PCs facing typical low level challenges. Ah well. Everybody wants to hit a home run instead of just getting on base.

    D&D General Humans are Blind

Neanderthal were probably just as intelligent as us and stronger. However, they may have had a less varied diet requiring more meat and indications are that they formed smaller social groups. So it may well be that races like orcs and goblins simply aren't as good at organization and extended...

D&D Movie/TV Paramount+ Will Not Proceed with Dungeons & Dragons Live-Action TV Show

As much as I enjoyed HAT, it didn't need all the special effects. In some ways I think it hurt because people thought it would just be another superhero CGI fest. Some things, like the dragon wiping out an army were cool, but were they really needed? I would have rather had a low level group...

D&D General How Do You Handle Falling Damage?

Roll a percentile dice? Start at 90% chance of death at 100 feet, increment it up to 99% once you get past 500 feet might work.

D&D 5E The Fighter/Martial Problem (In Depth Ponderings)

It's certainly doesn't have much in the way of rules support. But gamifying political influence has it's own drawbacks. No game can do everything, no combination of rules or lack of rules is going to be the best for everyone. Just like every edition of D&D has strengths and weaknesses. I...

D&D 5E The Fighter/Martial Problem (In Depth Ponderings)

Not only another thread raised from the dead, but "4E is better" baiting? It's a two-fer! ;)

D&D General New Interview with Rob Heinsoo About 4E

I would say that there is no perfect way to balance complexity and accessibility. Take 4E for example. In some ways, it was incredibly accessible because once you understood the AEDU structure it was just a matter of class and powers (more or less). Each power told you what it did. But after...

D&D General Are you aware that the New Edition (5.5 whatever) is a part of the 50th Anniversary of D&D?

    Nah. It's spelled G - R - E - Y - H - A - W -K.

D&D General New Interview with Rob Heinsoo About 4E

I played a fighter in 3.5 and had a worksheet - the dice I rolled and then a half dozen lines for the list of potential buffs that I could get. Oh, and a line that I used for power attack, which you could adjust up and down. It was a lot. Fun if you could do all that quickly, I would roll a...

    D&D General Ignoring the rules!

Nostalgia obviously is an influence (see the other thread), but it's not necessarily predictive. I stopped using XP after I had gotten back into DMing in the 2E era and I've never gone back. For some people getting XP is like getting mini-rewards as they play; for me the play is all the...

D&D General Are you aware that the New Edition (5.5 whatever) is a part of the 50th Anniversary of D&D?

If we continue to have a healthy and vibrant D&D community of players I can game with? For me anything that has a positive impact on the number of gamers is a good thing. I guess I don't see WotC making a profit as a bad thing. I'm not forced to spend money on anything, if it has value to...
