    D&D 1E Favorite Obscure Rules from TSR-era D&D

In my DMing history, I’ve only taken away a Wizard’s traveling spellbook away once, and it was unavoidable: the entire party had been captured and were released- naked- on an island as prey for a royal “canned hunt”, sort of like the punishment given to the protagonist in The Naked Prey or...

    D&D 1E Favorite Obscure Rules from TSR-era D&D

My first real inkling of this were the countless RAW vs RAI discussions, which echo lawyers debating over textual originalism vs legislative intent. The key difference is that, while both analyses start with plain-text readings, it’s generally a lot harder to discern what the actual rationale...

    D&D 1E Favorite Obscure Rules from TSR-era D&D

@Snarf Zagyg Since getting my JD, my perspective on RPG rules has changed quite a bit. My current take is that game designers have gotten into the bad habit of drafting rules in a wonderland-esque mirror to legalese…and rules discussions have followed an analogous path. But without the...

Campaigns in a nutshell. Adventures in a sentence.

That could be a very Arthur C. Clarkian/Stargate/Star Trek type campaign.

    D&D 1E Favorite Obscure Rules from TSR-era D&D

In the longest running campaign setting I’ve ever been part of, characters played ranged from L1 newbies to PCs over L20, starting in AD&D, getting converted to 2Ed, and eventually 3.5Ed. The 3 core players rotated DMing duties. And yes, all of the PCs saw actual play. FYI, those PCs...

    Economic Board Games?

Another oldie but goodie is Acquire. I’ve played older, simpler versions and the newer ones with additional play options. Both are good.

    D&D 1E Favorite Obscure Rules from TSR-era D&D

Anyone ever use the aging rules…during character generation? I did. Back in the late 1980s, I was creating a Gray Elf F/MU/T with a strong court jester vibe. A bard without being a bard, IOW. Core to the idea was someone who could talk their way into and out of trouble. So charismatic and...

D&D General The Problem With Paladin's Medieval Origins (+)

Mod Note: A reminder: We expect posters to be civil here on ENWorld. This is especially important in [+] threads. To be clear: being civil does not mean that no disagreement is allowed. A [+] thread is not an echo chamber. But behaviors like “mind reading”, “junior modding”, the temptation...

D&D 3E/3.5 Brainstorming another Fey PC

I’m surprised at Vanara getting bonuses to Str, Int & Wis. They get bonuses to Balance, Jump, Hide and Move Silently. I’d think Dex would be a proper star for getting a bonus over one of those mental stats.

D&D 5E Convince me that the Ranger is a necessary Class.

Mod Note: Y’all need to check yourselves before you wreck yourselves. Your mutual tone in here is getting a tad heated. Take a moment and consider how best to proceed.
